Greetings,

What is the procedure to pull codes without an OBD reader? Also, where can I find a list of codes and their meanings?

I'm a very hands on guy and want to have a feel for issues before I take my cars to the dealer.

Thanks in advance,

Tad

There isn't a way to pull codes without VIDA or other fully capable scan tool. You can get fuel system and emissions related transmission codes with a generic scan tool that is CAN data capable.
You can check for presence of codes by holding the turn signal stalk end button, the READ button depressed and pushing the rear foglamp switch on and off. The message display will now allow you to scroll through the modules by pushing the READ to go one at a time. Your result for each will be either :DTC SET, NO DTC SET, or NOT READY. NOT READY means there is no DTC but the module has not completed full diagnostic check. Some modules have to see certain conditions like car exceeding a certain speed or for the engine computer it takes driving the car for a while for its full diagnostics to complete.

This method works for all P2 after approx chassis # 51300, P1, and P3 platform models.

Thanks for the reply. What does VIDA stand for? I am unfamiliar with the P designations but will look into it.

Where I'm going with this post is to try and save a few bucks and see if the car is logging any codes to avoid having to pay the dealer to do so during my factory maintenance visits. Seems like they should do this as part of the safe and secure program but they insist on charging me for the diagnosis unless a warning lamp is illuminated.

Vehicle Information & Diagnostics for Aftersales

Volvo's VIDA (Vehicle Information & Diagnostics for Aftersales) system ties together service manuals, electronic parts catalogs, service bulletins, menu pricing, software (firmware) downloads, fault tracing and onboard diagnostics to decrease workshop service cycle time and deliver fast and accurate price quotes.
