I am buying 2002 XC with premium package cold weather package and touring package.  I tried out another xc and it had the upgraded 4 CD which I really liked but not the color of the car.  The car that I want does not have the upgraded stereo but the dealer said they could install the upgraded stereo and it would be the same as factory.  Does the upgraded stereo require any different interior body panels to house the additional speakers.  Any help appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, vetteman! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

If it's the 4xCD player that's the differentiator, as far as I know, you don't require any different interior body panels to house additional speakers if you upgrade to the HU-803.  The central channel speaker housing is already in the dash.

If it's a question of the sound, check out this thread: Hidden Radio Menus (http://xc70.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=282) and think carefully - you may not need to upgrade... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Hi Vetteman,
If I'm not mistaken the HU-813 comes with the 4X50W amplifier and premium speakers. Those premium speakers have a three-way system in the front doors and those might need different doorpanels. So I would ask you dealer if he can also upgrade the speakers. I have the HU-603, but invested in the upgraded speakers and additional amplifier straight from the factory. Great sounding system http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/music.gif I am really happy with this since I'm not a big fan of surround sound.. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I inquired about having the HU-803 installed in my new 2002.  Mine came with the HU-413, cassette/AM/FM.  The mechanic at the dealer said that it is not possible.  There were a couple of reasons.  First, if you do not have the communications option, ? , the unit will no work.  That is because this option uses the radio as an integral part of the system.
Second.  There is a software download that must be performed to let the car know that this is your new radio.  Something about it not begin able to successfully complete.
The mechanic stated that they have never installed one.  It is typically a factory install.
I tried and the dealer mechanic said I could not.  Besides, the unit alone costs $1028.
I ended up getting the 10 disc XCD changer.

Hope this info helps.
