Hi, I have the instructions on resetting the service interval light and I have made several attempts. I quadruple checked the instructions between here, another forum, alldata, and a Volvo tech a friend is related to. My light will not reset no matter what I do. Is there any circumstance that will render the service interval light unable to be reset? I'm pulling out what little hair I have left, here.

Doesn't make sense...I hold down the trip odo button, turn key to position 1, and in about 10 seconds it flashes and goes off.

You're right, it doesn't make sense! It only makes frustration.

I have a '98. According to every set of identical instructions I have read I'm supposed to turn to position I press the odo-reset, turn to position II while holding the reset and continue to hold for 10 seconds until the light blinks, then let go within 5 seconds. I've repeated this about 20 times and even made sure my odometer wasn't at 0.0 as cautioned by one poster in an earlier thread (not that I really believed it mattered). I've also tried never leaving position I as well as holding the reset button for 10 seconds before turning to position II.

It's my understanding that our 98's are the only ones that won't reset by any other method than the dealer or removing the bulb.

YOU can't reset a 98, only the dealer can with his (Volvo) scanner.
Where did you think you could turn off a 98 by yourself? This is quite documented)

Hello. If your dealer is nice guy he would reset that light for free. But what usually happens in a real world that the dealer asks $25 to do that job.Don`t go there! For as little as $50(or sometimes less) you can buy on ebay the tool that would reset the service light and srs air bag light (volvo,mb,bmw, seat in my tool) Tool works great! I personally use it on my 98XC and happy that I don`t have to pay dealer again.

If it's well documented it's also well hidden; I've not seen any information that specifically mentions the 1998 model year. The instructions that I've found all just read "-2002" and "2002-" with a mention of an audible notification in 2003. I guess I'll just live with the light...oh well.

I think you need a tool for one or two years of the later 850's as well.
I used my Draper reset tool just the other day.
Cost me around $60 a few years back.
Money well spent. We don't have a Volvo dealer here... :(

For future reference, you need the service light reset tool or a volvo scan tool for all front wheel and all wheel drive models from 96-98. 95 and older and 99 and newer just requires your finger
