Transmission part number

How do I find out the part number of my XC70's transmission? I have a 2001 model (2.4l turbo).
Is the transmission compatible with the previous/next model years?

you need the vin and call a dealer.

Previous - no

Next - yes, but the internal parts (like valve bodies) had running changes, so they are not.

After any trans replacement, the computer must be placed in adapt mode to "re-learn" all of the shift points.

Begs the question - why do you need to know?

I have 129k miles on the transmission and some rough shifting. Just planning what to do if the transmission dies.

If i understand you correctly I can look for any transmission 01-07 and it should be able to replace my old transmission? Please confirm.
Also, how hard is it to replace the txn? I have time/place and tools.
