Hello I just purchased a 2002 XC here in VT, and this great car is finally in my garage, I have looked under the car and see a skidplate, what is the procedure to change the oil, is the filter a cylinder type which is deposible and also where can I purchase the special wrench to remove the filter.

TFranchini, welcome to the forum!

Hiro's XC says it's easy to change the oil, and there is an earlier thread on the subject (http://xc70.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=276;hl=oil+filter).

You don't require a special wrench to remove the filter housing, an oil filter strap tool should do the job just fine. But if you feel the need for a custom tool, this special from iPd (http://www.ipdusa.com/productdetails.aspx?ProductID=855&subsubcategoryID=231) should do the trick for you. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The filter housing is a canister that holds a disposable cartridge or filter insert, Volvo p/n 1275810. Cost per filter cartridge is ~US$8.

Don't change the oil until your first service at 7500 miles! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif

Well, not exactly. That first oil change is critical, as any metal filings, shavings or debris that come loose during break-in will be floating around your engine oil. Some here have suggested that the factory fill oil in your XC has a bit of detergent in it to help clean things up. While this has not been confirmed, it is just another reason to change oil soon after engine break-in.

I would change the oil after 3000 miles, period. Perhaps less, depending on whether you encounter "severe" driving conditions. Driving in VT counts as severe, with really cold starts in winter, lots of hills and plenty of dirt roads.

Replace the oil with Mobil 1 or equivalent synthetic, then go to a 6,000 or 7,500 mile oil change interval.

If you lease your car, forget everything I've said and go with the schedule suggested in your book and use cheap dino oil.

Whether or not to change the oil during your first service period is a bone of contention. There has been talk on this board about higher oil consumption later in the life of the car if you change the oil too early on an XC. However, some dealers are apparently currently offering specials on 1K or 3K mile oil/filter changes. Other dealers (like mine) are telling customers not to change the oil until the first service at 7.5K miles.

I was so confused about the right course of action I called Volvo, and the official word is don't change the oil until 7500 miles. Volvo now runs engines through a break-in protocol in the factory and they do not want owners changing the oil until the first service period.

However, they warned me that I should monitor the oil level closely, as the engine uses more oil when it is new. There is also a statement in the manual to this effect. There also used to be strict instructions in the Volvo manuals about oil changes to remove particles in the first 3K miles, but there is nothing about this in the XC manual. I brought this specific point up with Volvo, and it's simply a case of "times have changed".

So my advice is to stay with the Volvo regimen, leave the oil in but check for consumption, and maybe change the filter at 3K miles, as Hiro's XC suggests in another thread. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

What are the odds Volvo NA will recall your conversation when your engine dies from premature wear after the warranty has expired?

And why would different dealers have different oil change intervals (besides the opportunity to make more $$$ from service work)? If there is confusion on their end, better to be cautious.

So call me cautious, but 7,500 miles is just too long.

Regardless of what Volvo says.

Interesting. I can see the logic behind wanting to change the oil early (to remove factory contaminents) but what's the reasoning behind holding off until 7,500?

IIRC, my oil's was changed twice (maybe even 3 times) before the 7,500 mile mark.

I have driven just 3k km's as of now and I'll change my oil and filter -using a full synthetic as recommended- this november. My car was manufactured in May and I started driving it in July. So at the 6 months point, it seems a good timing. In November I'll have probably just 5k km's on the car, but I'll just follow my gut feeling here.

Well, Gundo, I'm cautious too - that's why I'm sticking with Volvo's recommendation. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

They are putting a form of syn oil in after they run the factory break-in, so the wear is less, you can change the filter if you want, and it's really not a question of "holding off" but rather advances in metallurgy and lubricants that have made frequent early oil changes outmoded.

If Volvo wanted owners to change the oil early, they would say so - they certainly said that in the manuals of older models. But not any more...

Sounds like we hit upon a touchy subject......New engines don't have the old breakin period as in past times. My feeling is that, if you are using Syn oils, change at 7500 otherwise 3-4000 miles. My personal opinion. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Does anyone know how much residual fluid is actually left behind in the XC's oil cooler? Is it necessary to drain the cooler during an oil change or is so immeasurable that it really wouldn't make any difference? Just wondering. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I couldn't help but notice the XC's oil capacity comparisons in the manual.

Capacity (including oil filter) 6.1 qts. (5.8 L)
Capacity (including oil filter and oil cooler) 7.1 qts. (6.7 L)

Hello
The question was how to change the oil, Not the interval
Anyone out there know how to change the oil!

Wiz' earlier post pointed out an older thread that discussed details on how to change the oil. Here (http://xc70.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=276;hl=oil+filter) it is again.

Volvospeed actually has some handy tips on various maintenance procedures as well. They show how the oil is changed on an S-80. The procedure for the XC should be quite similar.

TFranchini, Art beat me to it, but to repeat (and with some locational detail for you), in the first reply to your question, I posted a link to a thread on this forum (http://xc70.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=276;hl=oil+filter), in which one of the posts, that by mox575, posted on May 28 2002, at 16:57 hours, positioned about halfway down the thread, describes how to change the oil.
