Ticking noise in steering column

Hey guys,

Just a question on noise again.  I still have not been able to fix the problem with the tweeter. I was wondering if you guys have this ticking noise (like a clock) around the steering column when the car is not moving (like stopping at the lights)? It sounds like as if I have a clock running around the steering area.

I have a cracking noise from the steering when I steer hard when the engine is cold.  It goes away when the engine warms up.  Hmm...

This is not normal. Ask the dealer about it, he should be able to locate the origin of the noise. There are a lot of parts in the volvo which are triggered by temperature/time/light intensity, but nothing which is triggered in such a cyclus.

I have the same problem on my 2001XC. The problem seems to come and go, but once it comes it is always there, even when the car is moving (though when moving it's harder to hear it for obvious reasons). I think I first noticed the problem at about 5K miles. Another interesting thing is that once when I had car in for service I got an S60 2.4 as a loaner, and it had the exact same problem. The car had about 2K miles on it from what i remember.

Going to tell the dealer about it when I get my 15K service. I am going to raise heck if they tell me it's normal...

If you see the dealer before I do, please post your results.

Ticking noise

This affects:

S70, V70, C70 models 1997 - 2000
S40, V40 models 1998 on (See below)

A ticking noise may be heard from the canister purge valve. The noise increases in cold weather. Volvo have introduced a rubber-covered clamp that dampens the noise. On cars from yaer 1998/99 with turbocharged engines, the canister purge valve must also be replaced.

If your car has this problem then contact a Volvo dealership.
