I am trying to remove the left front axle. Everything is properly disconnected and the front of the axle is completely free of the hub. I actually removed the entire hub from the control arm and strut to give me maximum room to work it out. I have been yanking pretty hard and can only get it to move out a few inches. It feels hung up on the inside maybe on the clip at the end of the axle.
Any suggestions? Pry? Pull harder? are there any tricks. I need to re-use it as I am just replacing a leaking seal.....
Thanks.

Is this your driver's side axle? On the 2000 XC?
If so, that axle is held in with a small c-clip. Take a small pry-bar and wedge it between the axle housing and the transmission housing. Take care to get it seated right so you are not prying against the seal (although I guess it doesn't matter seeing as you're replacing it anyway...).
One good tug should get it free. I did have any trouble getting mine out, but as you found out, it's nearly impossible to just pull it out with hands.

Thanks Ed. It is the Drivers Side. I will try tonight. Hopefully all will go well. I was worried about that clip hanging up and breaking off in the transmission....
One last question since you seem to know about this process. When the seal goes back in does it sit flush to the front of the case or get set back recessed. I think it sets flush front with the case but wanted to confirm if you new...

You're talking about the actual rubber transmission seal? As for that, I'm not too sure. I should have taken pictures. I don't remember it being directly flush with the case... I think it may have been in a little. Hopefully someone else can chime in for that info to be sure!

Mission Completed. Bearing should be flush to the outside of the transmission case.
Getting the Axle out of the transmission case is no easy feat!
Thanks for the responses...
