View Full Version : Noise while in reverse
I have a 2000 XC70 and just the other day while backing up I've noticed a noise as well as what seems to be a hesitation in the rearend. It does not happen if I back up straight only if I turn the wheel either left or right does the noise/hesitation rear its ugly head. New OEM driveshaft was installed 15,000 miles ago. Looking for a diagnosis....

How many miles on your XC70?
Is the noise coming from the front or the rear?
Perhaps near the wheel hubs or is this from the drive line?
Does it vary in intensity based on vehicle speed?

Jees, he said REVERSE, how fast can you go in reverse

I can go pretty f-ing fast in reverse. Geez lighten up.
mileage, 127,000 happens regardless of speed and is coming from the area of the rear wheels. Sounds like the wheels are either grabbing or something is catching

Do you get the same sensation when making sharp turns going forwards as well?

Broken Emergency brake pads. Given the age and the miles, the pads de-laminate from the backing and break free. The end up rattling around in there and depending on how it broke free it may only be binding in reverse. This happened on mine. Mine broke apart and ended up exploding out the inner drum taking huge chunks of metal out of the sides of the drummer. Binding and noise is certainly a symptom. Easy to pull the rotors and look. While you have it off think about replacing the pads any way as they will almost certainly fail at some point. Check the e-brake cable while you are in there to make sure they are not tired and binding. Mine were and I replaced them last night. you need to be a contortionist but not a difficult job.
# 2 option is the Viscous couple. Your issue is very symptomatic of a bad VC. As you know the wheels rotate at different speeds when you turn and that is the job of the VC to compensate for (among other things). when they go bad you will feel a binding when you are turning and some noise as described.
Not sure why it only happens in reverse, you may just not be hearing or feeling it yet going forward....

If you decide to pull the rear rotors to check the emergency brake shoes be certain to thoroughly loosen the emergency brake cable before hand. Otherwise the shoes will bind on the drum in the rotor and if they are not broken now they will be by the time the rotor comes off. Don't ask how I know this....

Another tip on pulling the rear Disk/drum is once you have loosened the Ebrake cable, if the drums are still hung up, odds are your cable is bad. The best way to get the brakes to relax is to grab the cable and flex it back and forth. The section of cable immediately behind the hub worked for me. That allowed the cable to slip back just enough to get the rotors off....you can also try and force th cable towards the back of the car from where it attaches to the brake handle...not as easy.
To loosen the cable, open your storage console between the 2 seats. You will see a little door at the front to pry off. Behind that is a Torx bolt. Use a a socket with a Torx bit or short Torx driver to loosen the cable all the way up.
I just did all this stuff this week so it is very fresh in my mind!
Good luck..
took things apart and it is the VC, ordering parts from the Volvo Dealer (bearing, dust cover, seal as well as the VC) will keep you posted. any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated
