Hello folks... introducing myself and our new 2001 xc. Its black on black and in great shape with 99k miles. We only have one issue so far... It smells like melted crayons in the cabin. Its wierd!

We have yet to detail it, but i sense that its not a cleaning issue...

Anyone ever had this smell or something close to it?

Thanks!

Grae

Is this all the time?
AC on?
Heat on?

or off?

Makes a BIG difference

We had the same smell. After we bought the car and drove it home my wife and I noticed a strange smell which you described very well as melted crayons. I found out our car was fully detailed before we bought it, and the cleaner used caused the smell. It took aboout a month for it to leave completely. So if your car has been detailed it is a possiblity?

No diff in the Ac or heater. Just get in cold and your hit with the smell. The guy had a childs car seat in there, and it was clearly not detailed for the test drive. Im hoping we can give it a good scrub a dubb dub down and it will go away. My VeeDub/audi buddy said that he smelled that in a passat once, but thats "just how they smell"

will update....

It would be a good idea to follow up on Ocean Racers suggestion to check the cabin filter.

Speaking of which,
Every time my mates, brother or anyone gets in my XC they say "It even smells like a Volvo"
I don't know what that means [pico]

LOL... thats funny. Yeah, i will check those filters. Where are they located? I don't have a manual yet, or even a Volvo owners manual for that matter.

You can access the 2001 owners manual online at:

https://www.customers.volvocars.com/owners/docs/2001/2001_XC/01xc_00.htm

But all it says about the cabin filter is:

"Replace the cabin air filter with a new one at 15,000 mile (24,000 km) intervals. Volvo recommends replacing the filter more often if the car is driven under dirty and dusty conditions. The filter cannot be cleaned and therefore should always be replaced with a new one."

The filter is located behind a panel located under the glove boc.

Although it isn't an 01 XC70 the following pictorial example ought to help:

Remember to use only ONE filter at a time.
Although there are two slots ;)
