My car has no drive shaft.......big surprise.... I dont know why, I think the guy i bought it from told me that he got it that way.. I know that its an early model 98 v70 cross country. VIN w2489459 production date 03/98..I have inspected it on the lift and found no place for a center support/ carrier bearing to bolt the body.
I think the 850 drive shaft will work from the research that I have found on this sight but I wouldnt know one if it bit me. It seems every time I find one its for the later build vehicle.
The next issue is why its missing. He told me the he got the car from a buy here lot after repo, it had sat there a while and was vandilized. Basically I'm not wanting to spend much on it and find out the viscous coupling is shot. As the search goes on any Info or source of parts would be appreciated..

The AWD is probably toast. Bevel gear, VC, whatever. Unless the shaft was removed because IT was bad.
But generally, someone doesn't read the manual, runs mismatched tires and kills the BG.
And finding an 850 shaft probably won't happen. Only a few hundred AWD 850's
made it to North America and most are still where they were sold, in Canada.

If you really want a new drive shaft, check with these guys:

You live in Maine and don't need AWD?
I'd hang on to that unit for a while...
I suspect you may change your mind.
Just wait for a little snow!

I've found that my 2000 XC performs near perfectly in snow with FWD and a set of chains on the front. With careful driving and the car being as heavy as it is, I haven't had problems in snow up to about 2 feet and on very icy roads.

But have you driven it WITH AWD?
You won't need chains... [cool2]

Is the build date like the german cars? they are usually 6mnths behind the states it seems, so 6/97 to 6/98 would be a M.Y. 98?
What ever the build date is I'm pretty sure its a single piece drive shaft. I'm not positive but I don't see any place to bolt the carrier for a 2 piece unit. Thats why I need some pics of one. I'll keep up the search.
thanks for the input.

NONE are single piece
ALL are 2 piece
Let's put it this way, I've never seen a one piece and I've installed them in early 98s, ( I think), late 98s (same as a 99) and 2000s, so I think that runs the gamut [sly]

However, I will ask my mechanic, who I'm sure has installed literally hundreds

when the snow gets deep I drive my dodge 2500 4x4. I really wanted a fwd car but this one was a nice one so..finding out I can eliminate the DS seems to make sence to me, less stuff to break

I run a 98 V70XC and it is fitted with a 97 850 AWD drive-shaft. First year V70XC's used a 850 AWD floor pan.

Like JRL says all the shafts are 2 piece up to 2000.

Main differences are up to 98 can be re-built easily as I understand it (by experts like Colorado drive-shafts), but later can only have the front bearing replaced if I recall correctly.

Shafts fail usually at the front bearing first, but there is a central support bearing that rides in a rubber ring that can fall apart with age damaging the shaft.

I spoke to vands autoparts in California and they offered drive-shafts, angle-boxes and viscous couplings for $350-$500 if I recall. Parts are guaranteed.

There is a support bracket that runs under the drive-shaft and the center support bearing carrier bolts to that with 4 bolts. There should be 4 bolt holes near the middle of the car between the angle box and the viscous coupling flange. Check the flange at the back of the angle box to make sure there is no movement there (when really bad the can flop around). A lot of people remove the shaft when it fails as they get quoted $15-1600 from Volvo for a new one (they don't repair the old ones). When the front drive-shaft bearing goes, if it isn't caught quickly it can damage the angle box unit.

Most folks also panic when Volvo tells them it can be >$10000 to repair the drive-line for parts only. Viscous couplings are $2000, and angle boxes are also ugly price-wise.

I was lucky and picked up a used vc and drive-shaft from a guy in Calgary in Canada where I live for $350 for both. I kept the drive-shaft in-case the used one fails I can then send it to colorado for a re-build (about $450 including shipping for me). I didn't use the spare vc as the problem with mine was the front bearing in the vc had failed so replaced it.

Good luck!

I researched it by VIN and it is a two piece unit. That ruins everything I was hopeing for. guess i will have to chance it, install one and find out what else is fubar'ed.
