Got an answer on another forum - thanks! Should be ready to post for sale in another couple of weeks if anyone is interested.

I have a 2000 v70xc I am fixing up to sell and my mechanic looked it over. He said that the front cv joint on the driveshaft to the rear is starting to hum and make slight noises since it is getting cooked by the cat. Is the drive shaft one piece? I see many references to the rear driveshaft and am wondering if I can just buy that and be done with it. I would go out and look at it on the car but am recovering from knee surgery and still not real flexible yet. Thanks.

The front joint is the only one you CAN buy as a replacement but for 300 some odd dollars you can get the entire thing rebuilt for about $400 or so at Colorado Driveshaft

It makes no economic sense
You spend $250 or so for only one new joint, but for another $150 or so you get a "new" driveshaft.

The only way to go (IMO_ as you really never know how that center joint is You can't really see it plus the odds of the center and rear joints also being worn (not necessarily worn out... yet [sly]) is, oh about 99% with anything over 100K miles
