View Full Version : ETM "Extended Warranty" --heads up!

I've got a 2002 XC70 whose ETM failed ( within 200k and 10 years). The thrust of many posts here and other Volvo sites [ e.g vedexvolvo.org; Swedespeed; blogs.cars.com] say the ETM is covered under an Extended Warranty rather than a required recall, for XC Volvos from 2001-2003.

Well, that's not quite true. My XC70 has a 2.4 low pressure turbo engine. My VIN# didn't match only certain covered XC Volvos for those years. After a quiet patient complaint to a kind Volvo Customer Service Rep, I'm getting a $200.00 "kindly" rebate off my ETM $800 bill -- but my bill also included a new Mass Air Flow sensor, 5 hrs. of labor at $90 an hour, and tax, for a total of $1600.00.

I don't know if the Mass Air Flow sensor is integrally tied to the ETM or not -- please let me know if it is. In any event, if anyone's 2001-03 XC needs an ETM. don't expect it to be covered.

You misunderstood
The warranty covers 1999s thru 2001s for 10 years or 200K miles from the in service date.
This means all but a handful of 2001s are out of warranty, done and done.

The only 2002s covered were a literal handfull of 2002 S60 NON turbos (maybe 200 or so) that somehow managed to receive the old design ETM
