Hello all, my folks have an XC-70 AWD 2.5T that's got a bad front L bearing assem... And (bear with me bc they didn't write it down yet) something about both CV-boots are torn in the front also.
The guy said the bearing alone would run ~$290 + repair = $565
Add in the "CV-boots" and that would push it to ~$750!
Does anyone have any advice about where to find a bearing, and or these CV-boot covers?
I really don't think that investing $750 in a 98' car w/144K on it, is a wise idea, what do guys think? At least getting the parts separately would save a lot of money. [cussing]
BTW- I did search and found that the bearings range from around $75 on E-bay, to $135ea new, online; is that reasonable for said parts?
Thanks all.
Careful buying non Volvo wheel bearings
Yes, you can buy Volvo parts cheaper, look around
Tasca has the cheapest mail order Volvo parts in the country right now
Tasca Volvo Rhode Island (somewhere)
I pay about 130 or so (10% over cost) Tasca should be about the same.
Not sure what you found for $75 but I would pass.
Inner CV boots you can buy anywhere for about 25-30 bucks (all will work) so now find a mechanic who works for (far) less than a Volvo dealer charges.
Neither of these repairs require a rocket science degree!

Thanks for the reply! Well the problem is, I'm just visiting, so I cannot do any of the repairs myself; I don't have time nor the tools and they are completely internet-illiterate, so I'm doing all the info-searching etc
Thing is, the car is not at a dealer, it's at the local shop up the street, which I think adds a little more $ for work b/c it IS the only local shop Vs driving +10miles, which I don't want to risk the car catching fire bc of the bearing friction etc.
Sorry to sound like a noob, but I'm not sure what EXACT info I need in order to make a proper bearing/CV-boot purchase Vs shelling out huge bucks for dealer labor and marked up parts... I'm not looking for a hand-hold here; just looking for the most detailed and correct guidance, so I can have the work done accordingly and not have my folks ripped off, while I'm not around etc.
Thanks.
You just got it (I never suggested you do the work)
if you can't email...CALL Tasca Volvo and have the parts sent tomorrow.
They should be the cheapest
Your local mechanic shouldn't be all that expensive

Ah! WONDERFUL! They do have the part(s) I'm looking for, thus far... going to give them a call tmrw and see if my assumptions are correct.
The shop quoted ~$290 vs $153@Tasca! ...if it was up to me and with in my power, I would do this work myself... I have a background in engineering; it's just a matter of time and tools lol. [thumbup]
