I am preparing to remove and swap engines in my 2000 XC. I only have a manual through 98 so I have questions regarding mine.

I am planning on removing it through the top. Can I simply unbolt the transmission with it supported and remove only the engine, or do they need to be removed as a unit?

Any other advise from those who have removed their engine would be extremely benificial before I get started.

Just FYI, the engine engine suffered a major overheating when it lost it's water pump on a hot day while my wife was stuck in traffic. Wrecked at least the heads, head gasket and turbo. All of the advise I recieved was swap the engine versus a rebuild.

I have a salvage engine in the way that supposedly only has 45K on it plus the turbo. I am doing the water pump and timeing belt as well as several new hoses ect.

Thanks,
Chad

Have you done the swap yet? I'm about to undertake this project on my 98 V70XC, this weekend. According to my Alldatapro subscription, the engine and transmission come out as a unit, but I would also like to remove the engine by itself. Were you able to remove the engine without the transmission? If so, were there any major hurdles that would have possibly made it easier to remove the transmission also? Thanks.

does anyone know which engines will fit a v70 xc? I have a B5244, Vin56. Salvage yards are quoting me all kinds of engines.

I swapped the engine in my 98 through the top, without the transmission and I think everything is pretty much the same except for things that wouldn't matter in the swap. I also did an engine swap on an 03 XC70 this month, but dropped the entire assembly from the bottom. Both swaps took about the same amount of time, but I think it was a little easier to drop it from the bottom. The only real hang-ups with the bottom method is getting the assembly in and out from under the car and setting the new engine on thesubframe. I bolted chains to the front subframe bolt holes and used my engine hoist to lift the car so I could pull re assembly in and out. In order to set the new engine onto the subframe, the assembly would need to be set on jackstands so the hoist can be moved into position. On the over hand, there was just barely enough room to lower the engine into the car from above and because of he tight squeeze I ended up severely scratching my right frame-rail and bending the reluctor ring for the crank sensor on the flywheel.
