My ’98 XC (186K miles) lost power while driving a couple of times over the past few months. After stopping, the car would restart and continue to run fine. Each time it threw a P0243 code. A quick internet search pointed toward the MAF, but there were none of the listed symptoms – poor/no idle, sulfur smell from too rich a mixture, etc. – that is until the last time. Now the car started (kind of!) coughing and sputtering. However, after letting the car sit a while, I could restart it and it would run well enough to continue - only to fail again in a mile or two. I ultimately had to repeat this cycle 3 times to make it the short distance home. Again, the OBD showed a P0243 code. Installed a new Bosch MAF the next day and have had no issues since. The sulfur smell did linger slightly a day or two (didn’t drive it much), but has since completely disappeared.
