I have a 2005 XC70 with about 58.5K miles on it - this morning I noticed what appears to be a broken ventilation pipe coming out of the head/valve area. I haven't noticed any difference in how the engine runs - does anyone knows what exactly this pipe does and whether I can drive it like this until the 60K service?

that pipe is part of the crankcase ventilation system, It attaches to the oil trap under the manifold. You need to remove the intake manifold to get to it.

It's a known problem with MY05 and it's a PIA to replace it.

Thanks for the info - any problems with driving it like this for a 1000 miles or so? The car is still under CPO warranty - so hopefully Volvo will pick up the bill - just a case of whether I can wait until the 60K service to get it fixed.

Helllo again, i changed it without withdrawing the intake manifold

Please Juan, do share your experience. How did you do it without removing the intake manifold.

I think you can reach the breather box end of the hose from behind the right side of the intake manifold - won't be easy but seems to be doable. I didn't take this shortcut because I used this chance to clean the whole PVC system - there were a lot of junk in the breather box and in the hose going into the block.

I just had this fixed on my 05 as well. I took it in to an indie shop for oil change and he noticed it, I have no idea how long it was like this but I did not notice any performance issues. He had quoted me 2 hours labour to fix because he anticipated removing the manifold, but managed to get at it from the side and fixed it fairly quickly. The replacement hose is not corrugated so should last longer, he claims.

I did it this way, from the right side of the intake manifold, and replacing with t-bolt clamps. It took me one hour (I take my time, donīt hurry)
