Hi -

Has anyone gone back to the dealer to have navigation unit nstalled? I want to have a factory-look, seemless install. If not, what is the next best thing? (pics?)

I'm not a big fan of the portable TomToms with exposed wires. I like a clean dash.

Massachussets just passed a law banning texting and driving...but the law over-reached...it also includes a ban on using smartphones for GPS! (Not even a cradled iPHONE is legal anymore. @#$#@)

I have a 2004 XC70.

I think the factory nav unit is somewhere around $2000. Your next best option might be the Garmin nuvi 760 for Volo, going to be a darn sight cheaper than the OEM product. I prefer the TomTom interface though so just hardwired my TomTom and radar detector into the fuse panel and ran the wires behind the trim.

Sorry, but I don't think there is ban on using your smartphone for GPS.

More like 4k installed
buy a cheap Garmin for 2-$300, it will do the same thing

You might be right. The MassDOT and a few other websites have a Q&A on it...but it looks like it needs to be affixed to the dash.

“Mobile Device does not include any equipment permanently or temporarily installed to provide navigation, emergency assistance or rear seat video entertainment.”

I am not sure if they are still doing it but IPD were trying unit which replaces the standard radio. It would work out a lot cheaper and looks good

I'm fairly tall so I position my GPS in a somewhat unusual place, next to my rear view mirror instead of on the dash, works for me but would be illegal in CA I believe. The wire runs up the A-pillar and under the front of the headliner. If you wanted to do a dash install you could do something like I did with my radar detector (you can see it on the windshield at the bottom of the pic).

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/9948/pa140663.th.jpg (http://img98.imageshack.us/i/pa140663.jpg/)

Wire goes around A-pillar and along the front of the dash. There are plenty of alternative wiring options, if you want to put it on the speaker grill just hook it into the 12V cigarette lighter and run the wire up inside the dash. Wiring was pretty easy for me because I have an IPD boost gauge installed.

http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3534/pa140665.th.jpg (http://img408.imageshack.us/i/pa140665.jpg/) http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/8690/pa140667.th.jpg (http://img256.imageshack.us/i/pa140667.jpg/) http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/4764/pa140669.th.jpg (http://img401.imageshack.us/i/pa140669.jpg/) http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/6186/pa140670.th.jpg (http://img844.imageshack.us/i/pa140670.jpg/)

That just enables me to hook into the boost gauge wiring (blue wires). It's the old IPD installation instructions so it's crimped into the circuit for the parking lights. Ground just goes to one of those bolts in the A-pillar. The new IPD turbo gauge install instructions run a wire all the way to the cigarette lighter, which seems a little unnecessary. You can see the wires and boost gauge tubing running up the side where they feed behind the A-pillar trim to their respective gadgets. Most importantly the device wrapped in blue tape is the circuit from inside the GPS car charger that converts the car voltage to USB voltage. Just soldered wires on the end and hooked it into the 12V lines. If you don't want to crimp into the accessory lighting circuit you can make a similar circuit with an 'Add a fuse' accessory and put it in whatever 10A circuit you like.

Volvo's portable Nav system includes the Garmin 760 and a static mount on top of the dash speaker grill. The last time I checked, the system was approx $1200 Cdn if you had a dealer here install it for you. The base kit alone is around $800 Cdn.

I used the dash cubby hole in my '06 to house a closed cell foam mount that is used to attach a ProClip and the stock cradle for the Nuvi 760. Power cable is routed from a small hole in the cubby and hardwired to the rear of the 12V aux outlet.

It only takes a few seconds to remove the Nuvi and the entire foam mount.

My Garmin Nuvi stopped working on me the other day, luckily its not the Nuvi thats the problem (it works fine on battery). I am the original owner of an '03 XC70 and the power outlet on the dash went dead - 7 yrs! I tried other plug-in's to verify it wasn't the Nuvi's plug; the rear seat plug isn't working either (same fuse?). Can anyone help me with what fuse and where it is?

thanks,

The online manual shows that it's fuse #13 located in the driver's side fuse compartment.

How about that for a first post that was answered in 18 minutes...thanks Art!

I like this place, I'll stick around...I plan to keep my ride for years to come.

Again, thanks Art!

OK, I checked the 15A fuse and it looks good, but replaced it with a new one anyway. Still no power in either power outlet (F & R)

What's the specific model # of your Nuvi? I know that most models have replaceable fuses in the power cords. Have you tried plugging other devices into the 12v ports? Just trying to eliminate all other possible issues.

Yes, my Nuvi has the replaceable fuse in the plug and it is good. I tried a cel phone charger and it did not work either, also tried an FM transmitter plug - also dead. Could it be a reley? I'm going to check the #13 fuse this afternoon with a Volt meter.

Well, I went to shoot it with a volt meter and found a blown fuse this time (the yesterday installed new fuse) - makes no sense (it being dead yesterday should have been a blown fuse?!) I replaced it with a new fuse, shot the fuse & outlets for a sanity check - 12V good, plugged in the Nuvi - it fired right up. Oh well, the grimlins must have been working overtime. All is well again in XC land....(wifey drives an 08 XC90, you would think I'd have discovered this forum years ago!)
