Sometimes the trunk unlock just doesn't work. I can hear the actuator move but when I squeeze the handle it does not work.

I am having the same issue with a 2007 XC70 that I bought a few weeks ago, I just have not had a chance to take it to the dealer yet. However, after 25 frustating minutes in a Sam's club parking lot I noticed that if I pushed the handle in, I heard a click, then when I pulled the handle the trunk opened. This has happened about four times now and that has fixed it, well allowed me to open the trunk, everytime. Not a true fix but it has worked so far.

I had the same thing and even the when i would apply the brakes i could hear a click in the rear. I found that the wiring harness had a nasty cut in it. The harness goes through the hinge on the dricvers side and had been pinched. Over time it created a tear in the harness and the wires were shorting, I cut and re soldered the connections and wrapped the wires and stuffed them back in. has been fine for a couple of years now.

One of your relays are dead.
To fix, get a new tailgate panel relay and replace it with the dead one.
The relay panel is in the tailgate on the left side behind the removable trim.
