I had read someplace in this forum about an electronic compass that was mounted in a replacement mirror. Ok, so I admit I like the idea of the compass in the mirror, but for $248.00, that's a lot of money. Does anyone have any resources/links for a moderately priced compass that does not require replacing the factory mirror.

Thanks

Stretch,

If you're in the market for a dash mounted compass, then check out this thread. (http://xc70.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=77;hl=compass)

More here. (http://www.precisionnav.com/wayfinder-digital-vehicle-compass-rv-marine/wayfinder-digital-vehicle-compass-rv-marine.html) http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I tried one of the small, battery powered PNI digital compasses and it's useless -- inaccurate, batteries last only a couple of months, and poor technical support.

Can't understand the lack of a compass in a $40k vehicle. Our Jeep that cost nearly half the price had one. We used it frequently in unfamilar cities and in rural areas. At least these days I have a handheld GPS receiver we can use in some situations.

Stretch,
As you mentioned the mirror integrated one is expensive, but unfortunately this is one of few expensive ones that will work.
Remember this is still in some cases a European design car, and turning South on North Main Street will not happen to you in Europe!
But, I'm sure that this feature will find it's way into Folvo, like cup holders eventually did.

I needed a compass walking in Europe. The streets go every which direction and often change names every block! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif Amsterdam was probably the worst because the streets are in a radial pattern so you are rarely heading the same direction for long.
