Is AWD working

2004 XC How can i test to see if the awd is actually working? I put it on a lift and turning the rear wheels moves the drive shaft so it doesn't appear to be mechanical. However, it doesn't seem to be engaging in snowy conditions. Last winter on a slight snow coverd incline the front wheels were spinning but neither rear wheel spun or moved at all.
Sounds like something is not sensing and engaging electronically.

Doesn't sound like it
Easiest way is to get on a wet road, brake torque the engine fat a stop... then floor it
If you get even a little bit of torque steer it's not working

I have a nice cinder parking lot near my house that i use to test brakes and haldex.

It's ideal because you can then walk back and see the pattern.
