The dealer showed me the navigation GPS last week. I was impressed I must say. In addition, it was in a XC90. I prefer the XC70.
I forgot to ask him whether track and log option is available or not with the volvo's alpine GPS system. Being guided from-to is usefull, but being able to keep a log or to create a pathway or even to insert waypoints is far more useful.
Thank you
Thomas

I'm still reading the Volvo Navigation System Manual (http://www.owners.volvocars.com/Home/PageContent.asp?PageID=4515&U=%7B4FF9CE4E-DB87-9472-0847-DB7B7B758C91%7D&V=%7BDB56DF99-886D-AC51-2E81-6CF79BB5C1F6%7D&T=2&C=804,480,208,239,1084,225,398&Make=Volvo) and will not get my hands on the actual VNS until Mar 28th when I pickup my car at the FDC in Goteborg. The VNS manual says that you can store/save up to 100 destinations and that it will log/display the last 10 destinations you used.
Like the computer internet browser's history file/cache it would seem that erasing this historic data would be a needed/useful feature -- especially for a car rental Nav System http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif
There are others in this forum that have VNS and maybe they will post more accurate info than I can provide at this time.

More manual reading tells me.
When inputing a desired end destination you can insert up to 7 intermediate destinations (waypoints I presume using your terminalogy). Thus you can have a Start location, then up to 7 waypoints and then final destination.
Another useful feature IMO is the search facility. Let's say you're at some location and you need to find a Kinkos. You can have the VNS search for one nearby and progressively further and further away until the whole country is search http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lookaround.gif When one is located it will calculate a route to the chosen Kinko for you -- neat http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
A friend of mine had a need for this the other day and save him a great deal of time and anxiety.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the hyperlink unfortunately this owner's circle is only for US resident so I can't read it.
I'm lost somewhere out there on the path of the understanding http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif
Let me guess. I may save up to 100 destinations ,then browse within the list to choose any given destination?
Can we insert waypoints?
thank you

oups, I was sending my post as you were http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif so forget my previous post
Can you create a custom destination outside the range of addresses and POI? Can you save this destination with the associated waypoints?
Thank you
Thomas

Thomas:
I'm not sure what you mean by </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Can you create a custom destination outside the range of addresses and POI?[/QUOTE]<span id='postcolor'>
...but you can create any route with a start, up to 7 waypoints and a finish destination. This route can be saved and recalled at a later time. This is my understanding after having read the manual.

Consider the Garmin Street Pilot Color III. It has far more information than the Volvo Navigation CD does. If you want to know where the nearest bank of america, mc donalds, or 24 hour exxon is, it will tell you. I have the previous version, the Color Street Pilot, and while it is definately not as cool as the NAV unit coming out of the dash, it is about 1/3 of the cost, easilly updateable, transferable, and has an input system that is very easy to use.
