View Full Version : Front passenger door refuse to lock

Okay, whenever I lock the doors, either with my remote or from the lock button inside the XC, the front passenger door will first lock but then unlock itself.

I have to press the lock button at least 3+ times for it to finally lock itself.
And many times when I return to my car, I find the door has unlocked itself!!! Not good in an urban area with lots of car thieves!!

I already made sure nothing is in the way for the door/lock assy to operate correctly.
This has been going on for almost a week now.

Any idea whats going on? http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/unhappy.gif

The locking system has been prone to some problems and I reported this issue and it was repaired.  I'd don't recall what the fix was.  I have seen the problem reported at Swedespeed as well.
The other related issue I had was that it failed to unlock electrically at all.  The locking system had to be replaced.  I had this twice in the front driver door and once in the passenger front door.

My XC is in for its 52.5k mile service today.  I can hardly wait for the dealer to give me a list of things that need to be repaired since it's now out of warranty.  http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif

It sounds to me as though the linkage between the locking actuator and the actual door lock mechanism could be binding (meaning out of adjustment).

If the linkage binds, it trips the actuator into unlocking the door again to take the strain off the actuator so it doesn't burn up the electrical solonoid.

I think if it were a problem with the door sensor on that particular door, it wouldn't lock at all, and if it were a problem with the locking system itself, more than one door would likely be affected.

If it is happening on a regular basis, you could try sitting inside the car, then locking the car with the button and putting a little pressure on the manual door lock of the affected door as soon as it locks (in the direction you push it to lock it) to take some of the tension out of the linkage, if you don't hear the solonoid trying to unlock the door after 10 seconds, then let up on the lock while still sitting in the car and see if the door unlocks from reapplication of the tension.  If this is the case, the door panel needs to be removed and the linkage needs a simple adjustment.

Let me know how it works.

Respectfully,

Tom

A very frustrating problem... I had this for about a year on the rear doors and only happened sporatically, out of habit I still check every door in the car visually before leaving. One time had my video camera in the back, left for about an hour and came back to notice the door wasn't locked. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif. Luckily nothing was lost but disconcerting none the less. I haven't heard anyone with 2003+ XC's experiencing this problem so I assume it's been fixed in newer models.

Fixes included replacement of a small gasket in the remote control and the replacement of the locking mechanism.

The driver's door on my 2002 did the same thing. Fix was to replace the lock mechanism which was done last week under warranty.

My 2002 had the same problem on the driver door, but only when it was warm outside.  http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

The dealer "fixed" it last fall, but then it got colder, so the problem did not resurface until the hot summer weather came along. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

This time, they replaced the lock, but it's cold again so....

We'll see what happens when things warm up next spring   http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif

Same thing happened multiple times on my 2002 S60 (Netherlands). I'll be getting my new XC70 in february 2004, hope it won't cost me another stereo.
All the locks (three in total now) have been replaced under warranty. One lock to go; hope it holds until my new car comes in.

About a month after I bought my 6 month old V70 I started to get this problem with the front passenger door. I found that the best way to resolve it was to lock the car then when the passenger door unlocked itself I would open the passenger door and press the lock down and keep my finger pushing it down. I could feel it trying to push the lock back up a few times but it would then stop and leave it locked. When I did this I never came back to the car to find it unlocked, which had happened previously.

I decided I would mention the problem when I took the car in for its next service, but a month before the service was due the problem went away. I did mention it, but they didn't find any problem. Not sure if the problem came back, as while the car was being serviced I spotted a fantastic looking brand new XC70 in the showroom so traded the V70 in for it.

Had it a week ago with the driver door, told the kids one of them must have left their doors ajar. Everyone opened and shut their doors and I tried again, same thing.

I had to keep the button pressed down on the inside and do it some more times before it reset itself. Spoke to the garage about it and they said it would cost about GBP250 to replace the lock but it might be covered by warranty (as it is) so they will change it next time its in.

Now I watch all the locks go down before I leave the car parked, don't want the same thing happening to me as Coastal had. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif

BTW still getting the 'ticking clock' noise, trying to do different things, reversing & driving it's there, A/C on & off it's there, CD on & off it's there. This sure has me beat http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif

I always watch to see my lights flash, telling me the car is locked and the alarm armed.

Chipshot, I had the light working and the driver door was unlocked, I was standing outside at the time and could not work that one out! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Driver door lock playing up again but I also have problems with the window (auto) closing.

It closes within two inches and then re-opens again, I have also noticed something loose IN the door http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif  when going over any rough bits of road, anyone else had a similar problem? Forearmed is forewarned as they say. Its all covered by warranty so no probs there, I hope http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif

The dealer replaced all 4 door locking meachanism in the XC last week during the 80k service under warranty.

Today, the driver door would not open from the outside!!!!
It still opens from the inside, both when unlock and lock, but it refused to open
from the outside when pulling on the door handle.
Very frustrating since now I have to go around to the front passenger side, crawl over and pull the driver door handle to open the door.

As well, I'm now experiencing what AWD was with the front windows, when the windows are closing till about 1~2inches from the top it would bounce back down....

Any idea what's going on? whatever it is, I'll be sending the XC back to the dealer again and make sure they fix it right this time...

I had my lock replaced (and I paid for it) and told them about the window, they never told me what they found or did but I have had no problems since. I don't think the two are related but there must be something going on in there.

I know one member took his door off so maybe he can remember what he saw or he might have taken a photo of the guts of the door for us to see.
