The rack & pinion on my 01XC 70 (136k miles) is leaking and needs to be replaced. A new one costs $2k, a rebuilt one costs $900 plus installation (4-6 hours). Given its age and some of the other work needed I've decided not to repair this vehicle and I'm considering a trade. It's not a matter of if but when. At this point I'm topping up the PS reservoir once every 8-10 days.

I'd like to hear from others who've had this problem to try and gauge how long I can run this vehicle with it leaking PS fluid at this rate.

Thanks,

Bob

Did you try www.fcpgroton.com

The racks for GEN 1 AWDs are $350 and are just fine,
I can't believe that a P2 rack would cost much, if any, more than that

This should work in the 01 XC.

Wow, dude, you did no research whatsoever. Almost worse than that other guy who wanted to trade in his car because he didn't want to pay for a timing belt change! While you're not going to have to tools to do this change yourself, you can at least buy a remanned unit for a couple of hundred and pay someone to do it for you. You'll need an alignment afterwards anyway so the few extra hundred in labor isn't going to break the bank, not like a new car anyway. Any dealer will find the PS steering leak, you must have fluid all over the place so it won't be hard to spot. And they'll knock dealer cost off your trade in price for the repair so you'll just end up loosing a ton of cash.
