So my car has been going into "limp home mode" when on the highway, usually up hill, the message urgent engine care needed appears. Then after a few times restarting the car it works fine all the error codes go away. Volvo dealer has seen it three times and replaced a turbo control vlave and air mass flow sensor, but the problem keeps occurring. Anyone deal with or hear of a similar problem?

Dan

A similar thing happened to me. Going uphill, 65mph, cruise control on.

Felt like the car wanted to gear down and rev up at the same time. Like the car came out of gear to downshift and that's the precise moment the throttle decided to floor itself...without the transmission re-engaging.

Scary as you-know-what.

Happened twice in the same hour. Never had it happen again since and it happened early June of this year.

I've got an 01 with 129,000 miles on it. (54,000 miles on the transmission)

My car once went into limp mode because I was draining the battery with my trailer I was towing- meaning if your alternator isn't producing enough juice, or if your battery is old and needs replacement, it will impact the car electronics making it do weird things.

In my case, the car was charging trailer battery and powering the fridge in addition to the entire car. It didn't like that much. Next thing I knew, ETM, ECU, Brake Booster, and another dozen system warnings in the message centre... Turned off the fridge, presto, everything back to normal...

Dan - How old is your battery? Is your alternator producing enough power? They replaced the TCV? Reallly? And charged you for it? Wow. Thats like complaining to your doctor you're not feeling well and fatigued and he gives you a precription for viagra, insteading of doing the simple stuff first like bloodwork. Not that there is anything wrong with a precription for viagra.

I want to get my alternator tested, and I know my local parts store will do it for free, but I don't know how different it to test one on a Volvo vs more common, North American cars. I just don't want them to F up my car pretending they know what to do.

My battery is new as of three months ago. Replaced an original one, I think.

That's a fair assumption... are there any indi-Volvo shops in your area?

My indi shop is a bit of a drive - it's actually around the corner from the dealership.

But I am going to the dealer one day next week for that recent letter that got sent out - I live in one of the states.

Heck I might as well just head to the indi shop - I need to see if they'll swap out my TCV with a test one.
