Long story short (search the forum) I bought my Volvo Certified Pre-Owned about 5-years ago. The selling dealership did a lot of "part swapping" before it was sold to me [sly] and my ownership experience has been rough. Moving on... I need to do a complete brake job including rotors, very, VERY soon.

What I have:
-2002 V70XC Ocean Race
-16" Wheels
-286mm rotors

I called three different dealerships today (for part numbers and pricing) and they ALL insisted that I am supposed to have 305mm rotors installed on the fronts.

QUESTIONS:
Are the 305mm's a direct swap for the 286mm rotors?
Does it use the same brake caliper or do I need to buy more parts?

I went through the resources and feel comfortable doing the job, it is the rotor size issue that leaves me less than confident. Can someone with brake knowledge please advise?

305s are not a direct swap. If you have 286s you need a different caliper carrier to move the caliper slightly outwards from the hub to clear the additional diameter of the 305s. In fact and according to VIDA there are actually 3 part numbers per side (ex. for the right side you have 15" wheel (286) - 9492275, 16in wheel (305) - 9492276 and 17in wheel (320)- 9492277). Interstingly though and despite what VIDA states here my '02 has 286 rotors as well. No mistake, I've measured them.

You might want to just check FCP Groton or IPD for your bits. From what I've been told, OEM rotors are usually Zimmermans or ATEs (I've bought Brembos at the dealer too, so??) and these brands are available aftermarket thus avoiding the rip off most dealers have on these parts. Other than due to unique circumstances which prevented me from my normal course, I haven't bought OEM rotors for any of my cars for years and I've had great luck with Zimmermans, ATE and Brembos. If I have ever had any complaints its usually been the pads that have created any problems I might have had and that is usually OEMs and dust issues.

Cheers,

Bill

I did Zimmerman coated (Cdn online site) and ceramic pads (FCP) this time after much reading and I'm very happy with the results including better braking, the price (<400 $Cdn) and lack of dust.

I already have to order pads and rotors. I can just as easily order bigger rotors and they are the same price. So, to move from 11.25"/286mm to 12"/305mm I only need to order (x2) a larger carrier - 9492276? Is that it?

P.S. - When I Googled up 9492276, I came up with two other potential part numbers for the same part - 8251316 & 8603448. YMMV.

According to VIDA (2008C edition), 9492276 is the 16in (305 rotor) carrier for both the left and right sides. That's all you need. No change to the caliper or pads. Of course, you need 305 rotors but you knew that. This is the exact same procedure I did on my 850R with good results.

Cheers,

Bill

Ordered and took delivery of new (remanufactured) 305mm brake brackets from Advance Auto Parts. They are boxed/rebranded as Cardone and have a limited lifetime warranty. I picked them up for $27.99/ea. They are cast with the ATE logo and LH 9209724 RH 9209725 on the bottom of the bracket. They also come with a single use tube of silicone.

If you decide to go the dealer route, the 305mm brackets are around $70 each (as of this writing) and the latest part number is 8603448.
