My GF's 2003 XC70 had a flashing CEL this past weekend. Pulled the codes, turned out to be a misfire on cylinder #3. Replaced the plugs (100K kms maintenance item, she was at 110K) yet turned out to be the #3 coil pack.

There was oil on the head around the #3 coil pack, which I think contributed to it failing and want to look into it to see if it is the start of a bigger problem. I searched the forum and could not find any threads about possibly oil leaks at the plugs or head.

Has anyone else seen oil around the plugs?

If there has been other threads, please link them! :)

1. Adding oil too fast on a fill can get the overflow on to the #3 coil.

2. Pull the oil dipstick and if it blows rather than sucks then search for cleaning the PCV system.

Caused by ineffective PCV system usually as a result of clogging at high mileage but could be loose / cracked hose.

Awesome advice! I've never heard of that trick before.

So I guess a temp-fix would be to leave the dipstick out? Internet rocks!

Check your oil cap gasket, they need to be replaced often and your has probably failed... Even if thats not where the oil is coming from it is still a good thing to check and replace!

I had a little oil near #3 also and it turned out to be a bad oil cap gasket. I haven't had any leak since I changed it. I would try this first; you can get the part here (http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-V70XC70-2001-2007/Engine/Engine-Mechanical/Oil-Cap-Seal/p-127-379-503-5164/). If you need a PCV system you can find it here (http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-V70XC70-2001-2007/Engine/PCV-System/PCV-V70XC70-Turbo/p-127-379-927-4728/). Try the seal first, as you could have just had a bad coil pack that was not related to the oil. Good luck!
