Bought my '01 xc70 last Sunday. Traded in my 2000 model. What a difference a year makes!

My new car has the square profile cross bars attached to the rails already. Not having used these before, does any one know how I can remove the cross bars? - They are the Volvo ones.

Thanks in advance.

Congrats and welcome jlondon! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The square profile crossbars (made by Thule for Volvo) should have been accompanied by a torque wrench which is used to clamp the feet of the bars onto the roof rails. Could it be hidden somewhere inside the car? It's black with a plastic grip handle attached to the end of it. If it is missing, you should be able to acquire one through your Volvo parts dept. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

If you can't find it in the car just use a regular 'torq' driver. and save the expense. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/devil.gif

Thanks for the prompt responses! I do have a regular torque wrench, maybe I can use that.... But I can't seem to see where I can loosen anything - no visible nuts. Do I have to open a cover or something? It looks like the end outter part is a cover of some kind, but I don't want to try a pry it open incase I damage it. The inner part seem rubbery... Any pictures to direct would be fab!

thanks again!

j,

I'm not certain whether or not a regular torx driver will work. The bit head of the Volvo torque wrench looks different. I'm almost sure that they thought of this for reasons of theft proofing the CB's. However, I could be wrong. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

The pics below show the wrench and closeup of the end of the crossbar. The white piece of plastic on the wrench is a torque gauge indicator. The hole at the working end of the plastic fitting indicates where the torque tool fits.

Hope that helps. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Getting my dash trimmed with wood panelling at the Volvo dealership.  They're going to throw in the tool for the cross bars.

It would be nice to know where in the world you are so that you could recomend your dealer to other members for their service. Go to your control and insert a location http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif
