....spent $20 on a cabin air filter at Advance. Replaced the filter (kind of a pain), now the interior smells like a new car.

That old filter looked like it might have been a factory unit. The car's eight years old.

As I was laying upside down in the passenger floorboard, I could smell a rancid stench flowing from under the dash.

Your car looks too nice to suffer from a rancid stench.

Mine was a pain to change too. I felt kinda bad throwing the old one out with all that hard plastic on it...so I ripped the plastic off the old one and recycled it into a Shop Vac filter:

I serviced mine by pulling it out, squirting it with the garden hose to remove the crap, then run it through the washing machine/dryer. Came up a treat [thumbup]

So I guess you washed out all the charcoal particles, too?

Not all filters have charcoal. The ones spec'd for my MY and setup are just plain paper, polyester or whatever it is. I would think the things would disintegrate if you washed them. I'll have to try it with an old one next time I change mine out.

Cheers,

Bill

If you just do a filter change it will come back.
If your car "stunk" you need to remove the cowl, thoroughly clean out the air intake with a solution of bleach and water.
You have mold and mildew in there and it needs to be cleaned and/or removed.

When dry, spray with "Fridgee Fresh" THEN change the filter

Thanx for the tips. Why not do it right the first time? I hate doing work twice.[thumbup]
