Would someone be so kind as to identify the part highlighted in the following photographs?

These images are not of my vehicle, but rather from a post on Swedespeed that I found through Google images. On my 2001 V70 XC, that part is broken at the metal piece which crosses the exhaust tube. Naturally, I would like to able to identify the broken part, but I can't find any part which looks like that in photos and diagrams from online Volvo parts vendors.

Those are exhaust hangers. They are like rubber doughnuts. The metal pieces are like "hooks" that the doughnuts hang on. They are either welded (exhaust side) or bolted (car side).

Yep. VADIS refers to that item (#16) as a shackle.

Interesting. The diagram shows the cross-member running beneath the exhaust tube. The photos I posted show it running above the dual exhaust tubes. If it was not broken, where should mine be with regard to my single exhaust tube? Or is it welded directly to the tube somewhere (as Q-ship indicated)?

It is welded onto your tube on the bottom side (closest to the road). They have a tendency to rust off and break. Replaced mine just a few months ago with a $42 replacement hanger from the dealer. It is a common issue.

See thread here for PN and pics:

Thank you. I experienced exactly what you did. Hopefully my indie mechanic won't charge too much to weld on a new one.

Nevertheless, I'll still need to crawl under the car in the snow. I noticed today that one of the rubber hangers is now laying on top of the exhaust tube, and it won't be long before that starts melting and burning.

Oh, wait ... I just read the whole thread you posted. You got the clamp-on replacement? I could probably do that myself, even if I have lay down in the snow.

Clamp on replacement was a piece of cake. Just a few things to keep in mind before you get under the car:

-If possible grind down any remaining rusted hanger that may get in the way of the new hanger arms
-The hanger is designed to be installed forward of the old hanger with the bracket arms facing back
-The hanger is designed to be installed with the arms on the bottom, not the top (this should be obvious but you can never be sure with some people)

Good Luck.

I got all that from the photo you posted in the earlier thread. It was very instructive. And yes, the job was easy. The one other hint I would offer is to bring vise-grips (along with the 10mm wrench) to hold the clamp shut while you're re-inserting the screw.

Many thanks. I know you saved me some money.
