Realtime data using OBD-II scanner and software

Can you turn your ignition to full on with the engine running with an OBD-II scanner connected to the car. Some software I have allows for realtime data aquisition but I was told by someone at AutoZone to never turn your ignition on when anything is plugged into the OBD-II port otherwise you will fry your PC's computer.

Any info would be helpful. The scan tool I bought that connects to my computers USB didn't have a very good user manual.

I picked up the ElmScan 5 USB from ebay for short money. I have the software loaded up onto my laptop. Is there any certain sequence you need to hook things up/turn things on in order not to mess anything up?

nah just plug it in first and have everythign on then turn the car on
