I recently purchased a 2005 XC70 and had it checked out by Volvo
specialist garage. They identified

Inner joint excessive play. Clunks between reverse and drive

Estimated cost of $600 to repair. So I went ahead with purchase after
getting concession from seller who was cool.

Today I took it in. They called me later saying they cannot remove
axle because it is rusted/stuck to transmission and that they have
sprayed it and will let it sit overnight and try again tomorrow.
Otherwise it will need a new transmisssion! Huh ? a what?
is this possible? anyone come across something similiar before?
are they competent? thanks in advance for any advice

Even in the worst case they should be able to disassemble the transmission and replace the fitting with the stuck axle. It wont be cheap but it should be less than half the cost of a new transmission. I just had mine disassembled to replace a leaking cap/seal in the differential were the axle goes in and my cost was $700, $300 of that was the seal kit for the whole transmission (despite only needing two seals that was the only way to obtain them).

I would think that a couple of days with penetrating oil and some hammering to loosen it up it should get free. The LH axle on mine had a really strong spring clip and took a lot of pressure on a pry bar to get it free.

Good Luck.

Well they cannot remove axle.

When I mentioned transmission disassembly they insist they had not ruled that out
but it is labor intensive and would not be done before holidays. They never
mentioned it to me though until I suggested it (Thanks to Jeremy). I will see
what one or two other places make of it all.

It seems someone went through this exact dilemma not too long ago. Maybe if they see this they can chime in.

Dave.

I also remember a prior discussion. Try a search.
