Embarresing newbie question

I have just aquired a 2001 V70 XC and I had a go at checking the oil level.   The dipstick is a little unusual, that funny two-kink design and then at the end a strip with 'XX' marks along it.   I am guessing that this strip is the min-max indicator but I'm not sure.  Any help greatfully received.

Not a silly question, in my experience every other dipstick I have used, only had top and bottom marks, now as Volvo engines hardly ever dirty their oil, it was really difficult to see where the meniscusis. So those nice people at Volvo put X's on the stick to trap some oil temporarily so you can see where the level is.

Nice touch.

Thanks for your replies.   I am loving my new XC.    I rented one to travel from Boston down to the Outer Banks in North Carolina a year back and loved it.
