We tried to order an XC over the weekend and received a call from the dealer today that Volvo is shutting the factory down in July and we could not receive the car until September. Are we getting the bait & switch from the dealer?

My wife and I really want the Volvo (equipped with DSTC, etc.) but we can't wait until Sept.

Factory does shut-down over the summer for 3 weeks I think.

Yes they definitely do, maybe 4-5 weeks. Europeans get lots of vacation time.

Bill:

September is really only about 10 weeks away or maybe another 4 if it's end of September. If you really want the XC70 then compromise a tad and see if the dealership can put you into a loaner or a cheap rental if you're needing a car. In the long run you'll be much happier. I know of at least two recent OSDers that rented a car while they waited on the car's to arrive back in USA. One I believe also had wife doing double duty ferry the other around while waiting.

Do you have a good friends that will loan you a car for 2 months maybe ?

If you provide details why you can't wait to September maybe forum members can help you with alternative ideas.

The Swedes love their time off....July is the sunniest and brightest month, the rest of the year there is alot of long nights and short days...so they celebrate the "midnight sun" in july and most of the country is on vacation. I just returned...don't miss it, it's the only way I'll ever buy a new car again in the future. If you can wait, it's well worth it. Try to e-mail the fdc at [email protected] and ask them what is the first day that you could pick up your car after the factory reopens.

Yes, It's true. Got my '04 a month and dealer was getting nervous since they where starting to sell more and run short with the incentives and financing they where offering.

Europeans take up to 7 weeks vacation every year. In america, almost everyone is focusing on WORK. We are surrounding by our work. We usually work from 0800 to 1800. In Spain, there are taking more than 4 hours a day to rest, then they go back to work. Back in americas, at 1500 most people feel too tired to be productive.

2 weeks off a year in Canada, even less for some. Volvo should ship its factory up here http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

This threasd is bound to run OT....so why don't I help it happen...

May I suggest that rather than Volvo move a factory here.... those of us with dreams of "the 35 hour workweek" just move to Sweden.... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

I'd gladly pay half my wage in tax if I could have the relaxed atmosphere of the Scan "workplace" and access to the public service community. ...Since afterall, we're paying upwards of 45% of income in taxes now!

You can always come back during your 2 months off in the summer!

Why not rent a car as others have suggested for a couple of months? You can come in way under what the Volvo will run for monthly payments. Having a rental for a couple of months is a small price to pay get the car exactly the way you want it, imo. Sure it's an inconvenience and maybe you don't want to drive a small crappy rental, but in the grand scheme of things, it's really no big deal. If you're concerned about the Joneses thoughts, you can always explain, "yep we have this beater for a couple of months because we're having a car built to spec by Volvo."
I think DSTC is well worth the inconvenience and I wish I had it. I was bait & switched out of it by my dealer, mostly due to my own fault. It's a feature that could save your bacon so-to-speak.

Donīt be to disappointed "wseliger".

I live in Sweden and I ordered my new XC in the beginning of April and to me they told 6 months wait on all 4wheel-driven volvos. Strange that you "only" have to wait 3 months in USA.
And did I understand "jkoshis" right, only ONE month wait ! ! !

If this is right Volvo:s marketstrategy really sucks.

And if they have such strong demand for the cars why do they close the factory.

Iīll have to talk to my dealer about this, And I can tell you Iīm not happy http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/devil.gif

Not 1 month wait for me, just got one before they sold out.. otherwise would be waiting until the factory opened and started producing more 04's.

One really does not have to wait for more than 3 hours if one could pay what the dealers ask for, in the US, and one is willing to take car available on the lot. However, there is between two to four months wait if some one in the US wants a specific configuration, wants a fixed price, and wants to pick up the car in Sweden.

Aren't you taking weeks 27 through 31 off? Surprising http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

OK, you have to wait for 2 to 4 months for a specific car in the US. Still donīt explain the 6 months here in Sweden.

You donīt see much -03 or -04 XC:s here now. And the answer is perhaps the 6 months wait.

It would be interesting to find out how long you have to wait in other countries. (Iīll start a new post)

Not many factories close in the summer nowadays. Instead they try to put their vacation at different time so they donīt have to close down. In fact most Swedes only have 3 to 5 weeks off in the summer. Only goverment and state-emploies have up to 7 weeks vacation. But nobody misses them http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Iīm having 4 weeks of freedom in the summer, starting at midsummer. Then Iīm going to put myself down in a sun chair and try to decide on colour for my new 6 months XC-pregnancy.

Can you ask your dealer to send an inquiry to Jason Borch, the OSD administrator to find out if they don't already have some prebuilt models waiting on the lot? Thats how we got ours within a couple months.

It could be as simple as Volvo deciding in which market their profit margin is the biggest, and then servicing requests from that market at a faster pace.

As steve pointed out if you are willing to take a pre-built car then the wait should not be that long.

Good luck with your wait, Mikael.

If its about margin.... then why are XC's much more expensive in Europe (and Canada) than the US? Separate from the taxation issues...

The US is simply the largest market for Volvo- and I assume that gets VCNA some production line privy?

To answer an earlier question about the option of renting a car until we can take delivery of an XC70 in September: The dealer won't guarantee the price (which is a little understandable knowing how the dollar-euro has been swinging recently), but more important they won't lock on a financing rate (which is very attractive now at 1.9 up to 48 months and 2.9 for 60 months).

I don't want to wait 3 months and then find out that the cost of the car has appreciated considerably.

I'll let everyone know how this works out.....

I'm looking to trade the old Mercedes on a XC70 and I'm astonished at how few there are available. I'm the kind of car buyer that will go to Texas (a long way from home) if necessary to get the car I want, but at this point it's either pay out the nose locally for the 2004 I want or accept a good deal from a dealer 3 hours away on a 2003 that's not exactly what I want. It's a new experience. Not at all like the US, where high demand translates into third shift at the factor. I guess in Sweden high demand means, Let them wait!

Welcome to the forum, maurcedes! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The demand is high for the XC70 in part I think because of some spill-over purchases from the equally high-demand XC90.

In Europe they have a different (and maybe more healthy) attitude to work... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

If you are concerned about the asking price and can wait for delivery for a couple of months, consider Volvo's Overseas Delivery (http://www.volvocars.us/FinancialServices/Overseas/CarsInProgram/XC70.htm) program. You get an excellent price, discounted accessories and a free trip to Sweden thrown in. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif There is a whole forum "OSD and Car Buyers' Forum! (http://xc70.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=SF;f=7)" devoted to this topic here.

Volvo is selling cars as never before but they have an employment stop! Ford is really squeezing out as much money from Volvo as they possible can right now.

Buying Volvo was perhaps on of the best investments Ford has done since the model T. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/alien.gif
