Best way to read OBD II codes for the XC70

I was wondering what everyone uses to read codes on their XC70. Is a stand alone reader the best or is it better to use a USB connector to a laptop. I'm pretty good with computers so my first inclination is to go with the laptop connector, but what software do I use?

I use this

on a USB port on my laptop with the scantool.net free software. The advantage of the scantool is you can monitor many of the engine management parameters in real time.
