I suspect this will raise some eybrows,as perhaps it is a stupid question, but here goes.  I did search the archives and found no reference to it either.
Is there any reason not to use a load distribition hitch set-up for hauling a trailer rather than opting for the self adjusting suspension to keep the car level when hauling?
I realize the car is a unibody construction, but does have a cast aluminum subframe that could allow the weight distribution hitch?

It won't work. Nobody makes one for the car. Sorry.

The systems I have seen comprise of a modified draw bar that the sway/equalizer bars fit into.  Nothing specific to the vehicle.
There should be no reason you could not take a 2" draw bar from, say, a ford truck  and put in into the 2" receiver of the Volvo and attach the bars from the draw bar to the trailer.  The weight should then be distributed over all 4 car wheels rather than just the rear wheels
My concern is the effect on the vehicle.
