Who initially wanted you and your family to purchase a Volvo XC. Was it you or someone else in the family?

I must admit my wife got me into the XC. I was initially looking at the AWD or T5, but I'm glad we decided on the XC in the end. Though (on road) handling is significantly less than a regular AWD , the looks sure make up for it. The good thing is that I'm the driving it! She is using the '96 Suburban to bring the kids to school etcetera.

My wife. She wanted an AWD, we've had 3 Volvos already, and while we considered a VW Passat and the Audi Alldrive and did not consider an SUV at all, the decision was fairly easy.

http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif First of all, I AM THE WIFE!

I wanted an S4 Audi Wagon with a 6 spd but my teenage boys were really unhappy sitting in the back seat of my Passat with my 3 year old daughter's car seat in between them! They liked the size of the Volvo. That, plus the fact that it is a very safe vehicle, is why we chose this car!

Cheers! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/music.gif

I'm not a wife, I dont have a wife (or a husband). I'm single and enjoying my volvo. So... the answer is me, myself and I chose the car.

Hmm. Debatable point. Don't ever take an agreeable/encouraging spouse with you when you're trying to get a good deal out of dealer. Sigh.

I had been wanting a Volvo AWD model for several years.
I took my 850 GLT in for (more) repairs. While waiting for my wife to pick me up, I spotted the V.O.R. on the showroom floor.

As we departed the dealership I joked with her that I had just seen this amazing sparkling blue Volvo and perhaps we should reconsider our decision to keep the 850 for another year....

Her reply shocked me "Well, its the sort of vehicle you've been thinking about for several years. Why don't you get a change over price while the other car's being repaired? We've spent heaps of money and its still not reliable. And besides, if that car's blue... I know you want it."

With encouragement like that resistance isn't even required let alone futile http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

The downside is that the sales rep very quickly picked up that a sale was likely and it was very hard to get the best deal out of him. It would have been better if she had been saying "no, No, NO!" so that I could say to him "Look we need a better deal here to convince her..." The fact that he had another customer eager for the car didn't help either!

domestic partner introduced me to the car, though he really wanted an X5. But I wanted the XC more. Guess who won.

When we went to get our first volvo we were both agreed that the V70 (99) had all the attributes that we needed. I made the decision to up-buy to the XC. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
This time I wasn't as picky (couldn't decide between the XC or the AWD) but the domestic partner liked the look of the XC better. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Me.

My wife had a 99XC with SO MANY problems that she will never buy another Volvo. (She drives a Lexus now. Boring, but trouble free) I needed the room of a wagon and didn't want the poor fuel economy of a SUV so I took a chance with the 2002XC (I had also heard from a reliable source that the 2001 up XC had much fewer problems)

Me, my wife didn't want to spend that much. We were looking at the new Subarus at the same dealership. I sat in the one on the showroom floor and, well, you know the rest.

I've had this "thing" about Volvos for over 17 years. The Volvo in our family is primarily driven by my wife and I will not have her driving any other car because of safety.

Think about it. Would you put your wife and children in a Chevy Cavalier? Help us!!!

After one Year with a fantastic V 70 R AWD (300 HP) and many highspeed Trips at 165 mph my wife and our two dogs want a slower car for us. So we make a deal-i became a new Volvo which i want and they can enjoy the more slower journeys in the future. I was originally looking at the T5, the Saab 9-5 and the Audi A6 Avant. I wasn't really considering AWD, I have a Suburban for runs to the snow. The fact that the Audi had AWD was a plus. My wife did not want to drive the Suburban because of its size, so other SUV's were out.

I did the initial test drives and research. I rejected the T5 immediately after driving it. The interior seemed too plain and the driving position seemed extremely low. I was not impressed with the performance either, this was a 2001.

I liked the 9-5 for its character and the Avant for its great interior.

I took my wife to the local car show a year ago to look at the 3 as well as anything else that stood out at her. She was immediately drawn to the XC. To be honest I didn't really know it existed. She insisted that the XC was the car for her and the kids.

Well, needless to say I have been 100% satisfied with her choice and drive it whenever I get a chance. It's funny, my wife who really doesn't pay much attention to cars picked out the best vehicle for our situation. Something I couldn't do after reading and researching for two months!

Greg.

It was my wife who originally wanted a Volvo sedan when we purchased our 740GLE. I have regretted ever since not purchasing a wagon. When the XC came out my wife again wanted an S80. I said, Bull sh*it, we will get an XC this time and now we own two! -Dick

My wife drove a 245 until it's engine siezed due to oil pump falure and threw a rod that punched out thru side of block, then she drove our 1986 745 GLE turbo diesel wagon for 200,000 miles, and all this time I wizzed around in sporty cars http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif The 745 got tired and so did my wife and my son needed a car so I was given the turbo diesel while wife got the S80 T6 -- geeesh what a switch around http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif Well now the 745 is getting real tired and wife insists we continue to have a wagon -- no argument from me -- so off I march to local Volvo dealership and they tell me about this wonderful OSD program AND throw in a free Premium Package -- I get giddy with excitement thinking of all those goodies I can now afford -- wife decides she must choose the XC70 colour as she doesn't trust me on this -- I gave in and hold my breath -- colour is chosen and I get free reign on all other things http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif -- wife(Gill by name) says the OSD car thing and the factory tour is a male thing so why not take son instead http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif -- sooooooo, who chose the XC70 -- well of course we both did, right?

Do most of you post from work? If so, that explains the obvious male majority here. Women don't have time at work to surf. (We're too busy fixing the mess the men make). http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif As for who wanted the XC, it was me, the "wifie". Gave up and started driving Volvos when I was pregnant in '87 and trying to plow through 2 feet of snow in a '74 2002, thinking, "what am I doing!?". Other than hating a 240 wagon that couldn't get up my driveway without 200lbs of concrete blocks in the back, I've been "sold" ever since. The XC beats the crap out of every AWD I compare it to, for many reasons, not the least of which is that I get the clearance I need to get into the woods without sitting up in the tree canopy and waiting for the rollover. We had a heck of a blizzard here in New England on Christmas this year, and we were the only ones really moving. (It gave this New Hampster great pleasure to whip by all the Mass***e left lane bandits in their SUVs. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

For us there really was no choice.
My wife and I agreed that we wanted a wagon to haul our two dogs and child that we assumed was soon to be in route; the safest one available that didn't cost more than 42K, and was available with four wheel drive and had close to our cherokee's ground clearance. There wasn't really anything else that competed with the cross country. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

My wife wanted the xc70 first. I had been looking at the xc90, with 3 kids thinking it would be nice to be able to take 6 in the care when a friend was over. It has also always been an issue of having a large enough second row for 3 sisters to not kill each other. The wait for a FWD xc90 is still interminable, and the second row leg room was ot as comfortable when the versatility package was added.
We looked at almost all of the Volvo line, and I was interested in the v70 2.4 T - we wouldn't be using AWD enough to justify the cost. With the OSD program, however, the cost difference became smaller - and on a day like today, with the Santa Ana winds blowing, the snow-capped mountains look very inviting.

Me (she chose the interior/exterior colors)

My wife just wanted rid of our minivan because it was starting to run up repair bills. I initially looked at purchasing a Jeep Grand Cherokee through the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, but couldn't get a decent deal. I had seen the XC70s sitting on the Volvo lot outside of the military base I work at and I always liked the look of this vehicle...so I stopped in one day and talked to the salesman. The dealership was offering $700 in options if I placed the order by the end of December '02. No regrets....

My wife---we went to the XC 90 preview and test drives etc because I knew that was what I wanted---Volvo also had other makes SUV's to check as well as the complete line of Volvo's. After all of the comparisons my wife (the decision maker) was sold on the XC 70.

http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Seeing it on the road...I fell in love with it...great looks, great lines, perfect size versus suv's and the awd.... and then test drove it...decision ...made...then had wife pick out interior color...taupe versus light beige. Also got the approval from my two daughters who came along for the test drive and initial overview. Had fond memories of my old 145s wagon...in mustard(!&#33http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif with a manual on the floor...had huge cargo capacity...beat it to death (it was bought used) then gave it to a friend , who gave it to his postman and who knows who he gave it to...probably still going! See example of the old "iron-box" here

They'll do it every time....http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Over a year ago, I started looking for a car to replace my aging 1986 Saab Turbo. The XC70 seemed like a great solution for the hauling ability of the old Saab hatchbacks combined with good performance.

And my wife said, "You're turning (a big number), and you're buying a station wagon. You deserve a mid-life crisis car." So I starting looking at convertibles, beginning with the Volvo C70. I decided that if Volvo wanted that much money for the C70, I ought to expand my search.

So we dropped by the BMW dealer one day, on the way to the Porche dealer. I said that I'd like to test drive their convertibles, and maybe the roadster but it seems too small. The BMW salesman (worthy of the title salesman, too) said "Whoa, we've got a special model in that you should try! It is a M Roadster." So I tried it. Yeow! (It's a Z3 body with enhanced engine, brakes, and suspension. 315hp with lotsa torque in a Z3 body.) And they were offering a real deal on pricing. The Boxster test drive was an expensive snooze by comparison.

So I bought the M Roadster over a year ago, and haven't looked back ... except to laugh at my wife. About a month after the Roadster purchase, she saw the newer XC70, and thought it looked great. Plus, it fit with her equine activity needs.

So we just bought the 2003 XC70 for my wife.... and I'm impressed with the torque on the new 2.5L engine.

I bought mine over the phone, and didn't even bother with the test drive.

Was having a particularly crap day at work, and called the local dealer for advice (retail therapy).

Got home onto the internet, and tracked down a large dealership in the north of England whose prices were far cheaper that those in London, and two days later it arrived on the back of a truck!

Wife likes it, and says "well I don't know what your getting excited about, its only a car" http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Well mostly me.

I have always loved station wagons.

I was leaning towards a v70 over a xc70 since its cheaper and has better fuel mileage. My wife, who's had "childhood trauma" from her father's Buick station wagon said it looked to much like a station wagon http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

But luckily she liked the XC70. So we got it especially when it was so affordable through OSD.

Definately me!
My wife's sister (first owner) is responsible for us getting our first Volvo (84 240DL wagon) it had 98K when we got it 13 years ago and has 160K now. We fell in love with it. When Volvo came out with the XC in 98 I immediately wanted one so badly I could taste it but she didn't want to get rid of her car! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif So it took us moving to a new house with a steep driveway and rust starting to show on her car for me to be able to talk her into looking at them in Feb this year. We found a great certified 2000 model at Bob Byers in Seattle, took it for a two thousand mile trip down the coast to California, across to Redding and back thru central Oregon finishing up the trip by sticking it on a barge for shipping back to Alaska. The "Queen Car" is a big hit with the family now and I just wish I would get to drive it once in awhile http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif but, my times coming http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif I'm just glad I didn't stick the Limited Slip Differential into the wagon before we got this car or we still wouldn't have the XC!!!

I've had my eye on the XC since the redesign in '01. But, since my wife is pregnant, I was looking into safety and longevity and saw my justification materialize right in front of my eyes. So, I sold my SUV, got the wife the XC (tho I drive it as much&#33http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif for her safety and for family safety.

I did try for the V70R but they were taken for the XC70 and true enough it is a more practical car.

I had started thinking about buying a wagon in the fall of '02, and was looking at the usual suspects A4-A6 avant/allroad, 325-525T V70 V70 xc. At the end of '02 an unfortunate incident my wife had an accident in her '98 S70 that totaled it so off we went to the Volvo store for something new. We drove S80 & S60 and she settled on a '02 S60awd. Nice car, at the time the sales rep told us about the waiting lines for the XC90 and also mentioned that alot of clients were leasing XC70's while they waited. An opportunity was hatched, I felt as soon as the xc90 inventory caught up they would have a large amount of xc70 inventory with low miles to choose from. When I bought mine the dealer had 12 xc70's to choose from all well equiped with differing color/mileage the question. I stuck with this purchase because of the volvo's better ability to hold resale here in the NE-US. While this wagon is not as sporty as some of the other choices I had, I find it to be a solid comfortable car that fits my needs easily. To those who have problems with dealer service, start looking for a mechanic who works on 240 series cars and you may have found a home, these guy's generally understand Volvo's and are starting to spend the cash involved in updating their computer diagnostic abilities. Although I just left the dealer yesterday with a $90 bill for reseting my SRS airbag warning, my mechanic doesn't have computer capabilities yet, but at least the power seats work again.

Keith

I didn't have a wife either when I purchased the XC, nor do I now. :D
But something curious I must tell you, when I have my nephews and the dog along on an outing with the XC, seems like I've been getting more notice from women! The nurses at the hospital are always telling me how much they like my car, and my collegues who are mostly driving BMWs and obnoxious, ecologically grim, oversized large SUVs sometimes tell me that they've always wanted one. Am I imagining the smiles and looks?

....who knows, I very well could be......or perhaps they think I'm one of you stable, mature family guys who have your life together or something? Whatever the reason, it's mine and nobody but nobody drives her but my mechanic and myself. If my girlfriend even starts on the subject of driving anywhere we take her 940. Is that so wrong? :(

She wanted the XC70 while I was partial to an Audi Allroad. We ended up with an '99 Audi A6 and the XC 70. Of course I loved the XC but was never really "allowed" to drive it since it was for "her and the kids" Eventually when the Audi "drowned" in a flash flood in Edmonton (Yippee!) it did not take much convincing to keep the XC 70 and add an XC 90 to the garage. So I eventually got to drive "my" 70 as a daily driver and I'm loving this thing more by the day.
