wow Lance, glad to hear you're all right, everyone else involved ok as well?

The safety of this car wasn't a selling point for me on this car but after hearing a story like yours, its comforting to know so much care has been taken in creating a safe vehicle.

Your photos would be interesting to see, especially of what the airbags look like after deployment as I've always wondered where they exit the dash.

Once again, glad to hear you're ok and good luck with the insurance company. Not sure how much of a concern it is in your area but here in BC, insurance claims can be quite the headache.

Here is my share,
I’ve been involved in severe accident with my 01 Volvo V70 base model in September last year. Returning to home from my weekly tennis session, driving around 50 m/h on very narrow county road all of a certain three deer were crossing the road. Trying to avoid collision with them I’ve hit the telegraph pole. The car was totaled with deployed air bags on both sides and heavy smoke comes out from under the hood. Guess what? I walk away from the accident with little pain on my chest becouse of the safety belt. Month later I came to the same dealer for another Volvo (needless to say that he was glad to see me again after six month of his first deal with me) this time I pick 02 XC.
The conclusion of this story - I’ll stick with the Volvo for the rest of my life.

P.S. The insurance company paid off amount which exceeded amount that I paid for the car with no delay, so no problem there.

I've posted the photos here http://www.v70xc.com/pics/lsokol.

You say you were travelling at 45mph? Wow, considering such there is very little visible dammage.

From what I understand, the car is designed to absorb and spread adverse energy thoughout the construction of the car. As a result, you may see rippling, will likely be on the roof, where the car has absorbed this energy.

Len, glad to hear your experiences resulted with the same positive outcome.

Donald Sutherland feels the same way about his Volvo:

From what I remember the accident came first, propmpting him to become their spokesperson.

yes i was going 40 to 45mph. i have not seen any ripples on my car, hope they wont show up. On a personal level it is so sad that the victim of a car crash is the one that has to deal with *#@ insurance company paying up. it is such a hassele inthe USA. ls

I am completely amazed. After looking at the XC crash pics above, the amount of damage appears minimal for a 40 - 50 mph crash.

The pics below are of an accident I had with our 2000 Suburban. A Ford Econoline 350 Delivery Truck was driving toward us and decided to turn in front of us at the last second.

I hit him at 40 mph with no time for brakes. The accident happened 8 weeks ago, causing $22,000 USD in damage. I'll be getting the truck back next week.

Each accident is very different, but based on the pictures above the descriptions, it seems as though the Volvo's sustained quite a bit less damage.

I got my XC back about a week ago. It took the autoshop around 2 months to fix. the total estimate for fixing my car was $11,896.37 the damages where mostly cosmetic, new dash and windshield, and new radiator, ac unit.  i am glad i was in my XC. Lance

That's quite the comparison!

Though I think the amount of damage to your car is based on how big your "competition" is, I'm still amazed at how the XC held up so well. Unreal!

How much did the replacement bumper cost? I'm interested to see if it's on par with most other cars, or less expensive because it's plastic. Lets hope for the latter. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The Bumper front was 263.00, cover front bumper 569.00, reinf front bumper 92.00, filler front bumper 8.41, absorber front bumper 136.00. the dash board was 1039.00.  if you look closely you can see how the whole front is pushed in about one inch. i guess that is where the impact was absorbed. lance
