The search function will yield a wealth of information.
Consider Nokians, Bridgestone Blizzaks, Michelin Arctic Alpins.  All are excellent winter tires.  Your volvo dealer may have a special deal w/Nokians including a set of steel rims.

Hi Daniel
Just bought a set of Dunlop M3's.....The tire shop owner swears by them and his neighbor, the Audi dealership, puts M3's on all the cars that leave his dealership. So far, I am very happy with mine. They are considerably quieter than the Scorpions (not hard to do) and they seem to be more comfortable on the highway without sacrificing stability. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif http://www.mountainbase.com/weather/DSCN0083.JPG http://www.mountainbase.com/weather/DSCN0084.JPG

Daniel,

Those BFG's look like pretty serious offroad truck tires. I wonder if they are even offered in a size to match the XC's equivalent O.D.? Their aggressive tread design also leads me to believe that these things would be pretty noisy.  http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif

The Wintersport M3's are classified as a performance winter tire and have received high marks across the board from Tire Rack's (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/winter.jsp) customer reviews. A great choice as an all-round performer.

I've been running dedicated Nokian Q's for the past two seasons and definitely give them a high rating when it comes to driving in more severe winter conditions.  http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

The Nokians were my first choice, but were not readily available. From what I understand, if you are in an area that is icy, the Nokians would be the top choice. The M3's are good in icy conditions, but are more adept at slush and snow.
They seem to be quite good on dry roads as well. I'll let you know how they do this winter. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif
