I have a 1998 S70 with 205k on it. About a month ago smoke suddenly started coming out of the tailpipe while I was driving it. We had already begun shopping for a newer car so I just parked the S70 and did not really take a look at it. This past week I finally had a mechanic take a look at it and he told me he believes the seal on the oil line for the turbo is leaking.

Does this sound plausible? Will this cause the tailipipe to smoke heavily?

Can the seal be replaced easily or would this be a major undertaking?

I plan to either fix it and sell the car or just sell it as is.

Any opinions would be appreciated

Thanks

The turbo oil return line generally is a pretty simple task to fix. I think IPD or maybe FCPGroton (forgot which one...) sells a kit to fix it. It's harder on cars with AWD because the bevel gear works fine. If you don't have AWD it should be simple.

If you pinpoint the problem to the turbo oil return, this should be the kit for you:

Most likely the leaking turbo return oil line will not cause excessive smoke from tailpipe. Have fun!

The Volvo S70 was best car I've ever had. Had two 740's previously. S-70 is now 10 yrs old with 255,000 km and still goes well. Still running original shocks very acceptable at ordinary highway speeds. Maintenance (to keep it in top shape) about $2500/yr which is much less than the 740's cost.
