Hi,

The dealer did and ETM upgrade because i complained about a little vibration on idle and told them I saw a little crack on the upper engine mount rubber, they didn't pay any attention to what i said and instead they called me and said first they have to do the ETM upgrade (1 30677023 ETM Actualisation) that cost 54 CAN.

still the same little vibration is there and they said lets change the mount in next appointment!!!

anyone knows what is this upgrade for? and was it necessary?

30677023 is a new software update for your ETM (ETM is computerized internally) that Volvo came out with sometime in 04/05. Without going into details. It makes your ETM run better and last longer.

If your vibration is steady then it is might be your torque/engine mounts. #2 and #6 in the images below are the common failures on this car. But honestly, I never felt much vibration when mine failed on these 2.

So how much vibration is normal in these cars? I can feel some in the steering wheel of my 05 at idle, but I took this to be normal. I had the mechanic check the engine mounts at my last service and he said they were fine (60,000 km).

Then again, I also feel the vibration of the wiper blades through the gas pedal, and some fine vibration as it hits 1500 rpm. Maybe I am too sensitive to vibrations?

As usual you did not post your mileage :(
I would look not only at the upper but the big LOWER mount.
These fail and or get weak at about 50-60K miles and on mosr AWD's are junk at 80K

Sorry JRL (I did mentioned the millage in some other posts thogh:confused:),

I Have 100,000 KM on the car... the lower mount was good (according to the mechanic who didn't see the crack on the upper one until i showed it to him)

I will bet it's not
You really have to remove it to see, (and then it will fall apart)!

How much of a difference did this ETM upgrade make? did you notice a difference?

You won't notice any differences

I was wondering if the Vibration was eliminated.

I wonder if the upgrade doesn't mask emerging problems so that
the system will function longer while the ETM is degrading.

I guess we will find out :) There is redundancy + complex control software so probably impossible for anyone to predict.

BTW, I recall reading a swedish university paper on the control software of this ETM. I can't find it now but did find this paper. Look at its references to see the abundant materials on Swede's study on the ETM.

well, i don't feel any difference in the vibration but it seems it effected the gas consumption, i used to get around 640-650KM for a full tank of premium 91k, after the ETM upgrade it is 670-680KM, although i am not sure if i am exactly correct.

You aare absolutely right. The original software was very smart and threw codes due to symptoms, hesitation and surging. The new software does not set a code until you are in or almost in limp home mode. Then it has to set the code on two successive driving cycles.

For the whole history of the ETM problem see http://VEXEDvolvo.org. For a lifetime replacement see http://FixYourETM.com

I don't really like that, this "strategy" can only help Volvo to keep the ETM alive until out of warranty :(
