View Full Version : 07 XC70 Stereo Removal
My son decided to start a new saving account in my CD player (HU650 I believe). I have returned this to the dealer for repair but they won't touch it and told me to go to a stereo shop to get it fixed. After going to the stereo shop they wanted to charge me $70 just to remove it. I figure I can do this myself but after looking at the system I was hoping for some guidance in removing the unit.
Any thoughts if my CD player will be shot now due to the change deposited in it? My feeling was that I would just be able to remove the few coins from the back:o......thanks in advance.

Mu daughter did this. I was able to remove it, and get all the coins out. It works great now, except I have no display lights, so I can't see what station/track I'm on.
I'll look around, and see if I can find a writeup on how to remove it. Just be sure NOT TO DISCONNECT the Climate Control Module unless you disconnect your battery first, or it'll be a $100 trip to the dealer to get the computer reset.
That is positive news. thanks for the tip re the battery.

Does this work with an HU 803 also? I think my kid stuck a quarter in there. I tried to get it out with a knife, but some white thing started coming out.
I just want my CD's back for now, and will just stick in a Pioneer once I get this beast apart.
Thanks.

05+ are all the same
01-04 are pretty much the same minus theres more screws in the 04 and under and the CCM and the radio come apart before they come out of the car

OK, even if I go to all this bother, will I be able to get my CD's back out?

I have the lower pieces off right now. Can't for the life of me figure out how to get the heater controls off without breaking something. This is such a royal pain just to get to the radio! I just want my CD's back!

be patient, kimosabe :p
once the 2 torx screws are removed from the bottom of the CCM, pull the CCM from the bottom part, outwards first and then downward. There are a couple of clips holding the CCM in the upper area.

I had the torx screws out, and the shifter piece out, and the little pen holder thingy out, but it felt like the heater control holder was going to snap, and I was prying with a screwdriver from the top, and was starting to mar the plastic, so I just put it all together and gave up. Are there clips or something which need to be released first?

Sasq - if you're ever up in Calgary region, I'll take it out for you. I've worked on my radio about a dozen times trying to investigate the radio swapping issue.
a. Pull the fuse for the radio.
b. Remove the pen holder.
c. Pull out the climate control (after removing the screws) but don't disconnect it, just pull the unit out and hang it off to the left.
d. When you put the climate controls aside, like you said, there are two bottom torx screws that hold the radio in place. Wiggle it up and down from the bottom (you can try using the bottom of the brack where the two torx screws go in, it should just pull right out. No clips or anything.
If you want to take the faceplate off (do so carefully), there are two small silver phillips screws holding the faceplace in on the side of the radio. There are also around a dozen small release clips on the top, bottom and side, holding it in. Start with the bottom using a small screw driver and push it in, do the sides, then the top. The faceplace should then come off.

Forkster, he's still trying to remove the climate control unit to get to the radio.
CCM is held up in the upper section like a hinge, so you need to start pulling from the bottom or you'll break the "hinge part" and unit will be loose when you reattach.
Sasq, how are we doing? did you get the CCM out yet?

Riiiight... my bad. missed that. Like jda siad, we need to tilt it up from the bottom just a little and pull it out. There ARE clips on that make a loud crackling noise when you pull it out. Give it a good tug. Mine was a PITA but it will come out with a good tug. Maybe I should make a video of it. I found lifting from the bottom using my tumbs and my finger just over the top of it to remove the ccm. :)

Are these special tools from Volvo, that are used to pry out and remove the gear selector cover?

How does one remove all these screws that are drawn as if their heads are inside?
Your XC is a MY07 so HU extraction will be much easier than earlier model years. Check out the link below.
