Took advantage of the warmer weather to do a general inspection under the car and discovered oil dripping from the rear differential, near where the driveshaft connects up. Couldn't get all the way under to see it very well but I'm guessing the yoke shaft seal is leaking. Anyone have instructions for replacing rear diff seals,or an exploded diagram of the rear differential on an '01? Has anyone done this repair, and if so how hard is it?

Thanks in advance.

Okay I just looked this up in Vadis. You have to remove the driveshaft and viscous coupling to get at the pinion seal. It actually doesn't look like too bad of a job, and could be done with the car on jackstands. It shows a special tool for installing the seal, but I don't think it's totally necessary if you've had experience R&R ing oil seals. If I knew how to post the actual pages from Vadis I would, but unfortunately I haven't evolved to that yet. Maybe Willy or someone else could post that info.

Here you go MoeB. 3 PDFs files on how to replace this seal.

My VADIS converted PDF (I use cutepdf) takes awhile to print on my Mac for some reason. Just a heads up since you are Mac too.

Howard, thanks for going to all the trouble of finding and posting those PDFs. However, I don't see instructions for the seal replacement. That first pdf shows bushings, the second shows how to replace the whole drive and the third is for removing the anti-roll bar.

Aviator, thanks for the encouraging words. Can you look at these PDFs and see if they are what you were looking at? Your description includes removal of the VC but these instructions don't show that.

After looking at the pictures I'm wondering now if it isn't the differential that is leaking but rather the VC. Before anyone goes to any more trouble over this let me get some pictures this morning and post back.

Yes, those instructions are for re-bushing the rear diff, and also how to R&R th rear end. All we want to do is reomove the VC which will expose the pinion seal in the front of the diff (which looks like an angle gear assembly by the way). I'll see what I can do.

OK here's what the the leak looks like. It seems like it's either leaking from the left rear axle shaft, from where the VC connects to the differential, or both. What's it look like to you guys?

Anyone ever help this guy out? Anyone know if the VC could leak like that? Did you get it figured out MoeB?
happy motoring!

This thread will help a little http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showthread.php?22437-2001-V70XC-Final-drive-woes&highlight=woes.

BUT...
clean the area thoroughly and look around again in a week.
The location suggest, it could just be a missing filler plug seal - the copper crush washer.
