I have been looking for a cold air intake for my 2001 xc70, but have only found one from Eurosport Tuning (link (http://www.eurosporttuning.ca/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=EST02&Product_Code=VLE-160-201&Category_Code=VL-V70-en)) for $200. Has anyone made an intake or found another intake kit that is cheaper?

Simota makes one, slightly under $200.

Pretty much ALL cars come from the factory with cold air intakes these days, making these after-market items complete nonsense. Save your money or spend it on something that makes a real difference.

How about a K&N air filter? It's only about $75...
Is it worth it? I'm also looking for a little more punch from the 2.5T.

You're totally right on that. Realistically, it's just a bunch of crap. Intake air will always be cold or colder.....the device doesn't do anything to make any kind of difference really; how are you going to make intake air colder at this time of year when it's already extreme subzero as well as going through an intercooler???? That's like saying you'd like a cold air intake for a fanjet engine.

i dont have a CAI but heres a link to a DIY project writeup http://www.quickbrickmotorsports.com/tech_diycai.html
I guess this answers my question:
"The only option for upgrading to a higher flowing filter is a K&N stock replacement panel filter which is an oiled cotton filter. Oiled cotton filters are not good for MAF sensors as the oil damages the sensor. Tests have shown that the K&N passes a lot of dirt, and it also reaches capacity (i.e. gets clogged with dirt) quickly."

I wouldn't put a K&N on my car. A little research on the web will probably reveal some not so favorable info on the K&N filter. It's been a while since I have looked for that stuff since I have ruled it out a long while ago.

K&N filter in my 02 XC70 created serious issues with idle speed and general driveability. I reinstalled the paper filter and all problems ceased.
I would like to try out the new Amsoil dry media filter, though.
I cleaned my MAF sensor with MAF cleaner spray and city MPG increased to 19.6 from 18. Haven't made a road trip yet, so I don't know about highway MPG.
