As the title suggests we've just had a gearbox replaced at 160 000kms. It's all working fine but we now have a noise coming from around the front dash on the drivers side (Right hand side in Australia). Hard to describe but sounds a bit like air rushing, could also be engine noise - very very hard to tell. Thought it was coming out of the vent at first but the noise continued even with the vent shut off. Noise increases with an increase in RPM and doesn't matter if the cars in gear or not. Nothing stops the noise. Foot down - noise up and vice versa. You can just hear it at idle with windows up and air con off.

I did a bit of a search and found out about a brake booster issue. Did the test and the noise persists with or without your foot on the brake. The mechanic has had a look and is as mystified as we are. All I know is I had never heard this noise prior to the gearbox being replaced. The car's off to Volvo tomorrow but if you folks could shed any light that would be appreciated.

We love the car but driving around with our fingers crossed is getting to be a bit of a worry

On left hand drive cars, if the steering rack has been dis/reconnected, a bushing inside the rubber boot on the floor board gets pushed out sometimes. When mine did this, it sounded just like you described. This will likely also cause noises when you turn. Just take a quick look at where the steering column enters the floor board.

Agreed as that's exactly what happened. Unfortunatly that's was sorted out before we picked the car up so must be something else causing this noise

Turns out you were spot on. When we picked the car up 2 weeks ago the machanic told us the car had been making a noise from the steeing rack boot. Bit of a squeak when the steering wheel was turned. He had lubricated the thing and that seemed to stop the noise.

What he didn't pick up was the boot being out of place enough to allow noise through from the engine bay to the cabin. The guys at Volvo knew what it was the moment they heard it. All fixed with a minimum of fuss

Thanks for the advice blokes. Much appreciated
