I had recenly heard this loud noise up front of the car for a couple days. I had thought it was the engine or broken off exhaust pipe. It turns out it was a bad passnger front wheel bearing. My 2001 XC70 has 93K miles. Is this a common thing to go bad at 93K miles? Given this cost $500 to fix I am worried the other 3 will go bad. Anything I could have or can do to prevent these from going bad or is it normal wear and tear?

I also wanted to know if on these cars also the wheel bearings can be repacked or something like that? like i had an Infiniti QX4 and that was the only thing they used to do at service and never had a wheel bearing go bad...

For some reason, Volvo hub/wheel bearings DO go bad and as soon as 40K miles!

I just replaced the front ones in my '02 at 125K mi. They are $135ea. from FCP, with a few new bolts and an E14 torx socket you can pretty much do it yourself for $300. I guess another alternative would be to take the car and parts to a mechanic that charges less than the $75/hr the dealer charges for labor.

Unfortunately not, the wheel bearings come as a sealed hub unit, you have to replace the whole thing.

Sounds like my front right bearing is going too. Do you have a link for FCP?
