Has anyone replaced the OEM Xenon Headlights? I have a '05 and one burned out, and our local dealer wants over $250 for the replacement. I called around and NAPA thinks that they have the relpacement bulb for $91.

I am wondering if that sounds like the right bulb, and how easy the replacement is.

MY02~MY06 OEM Xenon bulbs should be 4300K D2R.
Just make sure you go with name brand like OSRAM, Phillips or Bosch. [thumbup]

Ni Hao, fellow "Taiwanese",

Guess this 4300K D2R is the xenon bulb partcode, correct?

What you did not indicate is if and how to replace the xenon bulb.
Instruction manual says go to st(d)ealer.....where you get ripped off for $ 250,- per bulb incl installation....I may presume

So can you replace the bulb yourself or not? Replacing will always be possible for any technical person...but what I mean is, is it possible to do for a "normal" person....

Your answer triggered me further as I noticed lately that you customised your Lavasand monster 2002 with ABL's, hence Xenons. (your posted pics some time ago here)
We discussed about this longer time ago via pm's when we first got acquainted. Did you/your dealer activate the auto-switch on function and if so what lamp or lamps auto switch on at position 09:00 when you start the car (see also my questions in the recent thread on first page on this forum; DRL question started by Lincoln.....

Thx for input Ben, Xie Xie !

The bulbs are pretty easy to replace, with a very minimum of tools. I had one go out and bought 2 off ebay for $90. They are supposedly Phillips D2R, but I'm a little skeptical. I only installed one, and the light looks a little different than the original- a little whiter, not as "blue". They do work fine however, just not sure how long they'll last. Just go look under the hood. There is a plastic cover to unscrew, and then pull the socket assembly and bulb out carefully (and it's a very tight squeeze for your hand), paying attention to the way it was oriented relative to the headlight. Swap out and replace- one of the easiest DIY jobs on these cars for sure.

Hi Bram:

The spec for the MY04~MY06 Xenon bulb is D2R, and the 4300k is the factory spec temperature of the bulb.
You can go with 6000k which is more blue or 3000k which is more yellow.

On ABL equipped MY07+ XC70 it comes with D1S bulbs instead of MY03~MY06 XC70's D2R, FYI most projector headlights uses D2S or D1S, and reflector headlights uses D2R.

Here's a great read on the differences:

Yes, it's pretty straight forward on how to replace the xenon bulbs, if you can change a regular halogen bulb in a car, you can do the xenons too. Just make sure the power is off since the ballast and igniter for the xenon bulbs has 15000 volts when first ignited and 80 volts when in use..

As for the Auto switch, I did not ask the dealer to activate that function, nor the DRL function. Since I am old fashioned and likes to turn on and off the lights at my own desire. :D

Hope this helps! [thumbup]

I can not find the plastic cover to unscrew. I see a the large rubber covers and a metal clip to unlatch, but do not see the plastic cover.

Thanks for the response. I will give it another try tonight. Do I need to unhook the battery, or should I be good with the ignition turned off?
