3 wheels spinning

Just wondering what should happen on an 04 xc70. I put the car in a situation where going forward uphill on ice/snow, from a stop, caused the two front wheels and only one rear wheel to spin. Should both the rear wheels be spinning? Not in "W" mode but in drive and I do not have the manual traction control button.

Wheels spin if they don't have traction. Assuming if three wheels spin then the fourth should spin is not a good assumption. Were you able to drive up the hill in control and not have vehicle swerve around? If yes, then it works as designed. Also, Traction control will brake a spinning wheel allowing that wheel to regain traction.-Dick
