View Full Version : oil drain plug is a filter?

We all know there is no filter to change in the tranny of the XC70, at least my 2002 Ocean Race model. But it dawned on me that the drain plug, being magnetic, does offer some valuable filtering capacity, albeit not much capacity. After about a year of driving after a complete tranny fluid change, I took a look at the plug. Yup, the magnet was covered with gook. The fluid looked decent. So, I am thinking about doing a regular "drain, wipe plug, refill" service routine to get as many of those microscopic metallic particles out of the fluid. Could only help, right? The procedure start to finish took about 30 minutes.
thoughts?

Dan, there are literally hundreds of postings on this topic, go to Gibbons meathod in your search heading and read up. It's simple and effective. Actually look up "transmission flushing at home...".

Johhny,
I should have been clearer. I have done the tranny fluid change. But my point is that we do not need to wait until the oil change interval to do the tranny a little bit of good by cleaning the magnetic drain plug. I didn't see any postings on a regular regimen (more regular than changing the fluid) of cleaning the drain plug.
Thanks,
Dan

I think that a periodic change (once a year) of 1/3 of the fluid would be a good thing and may be all that is needed.

I'd just increase the frequency of your flushing, and clean the plug at that time.
I had mine changed for me prior to picking it up (thanks JRL) just under 30k.

With the IPD flush kit (http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-V70XC70-2001-2007/Transmission-&-Drive-Train/Automatic-Transmission-Flush-Hose-Kit/p-127-389-1052/), and a bit more than a case of 3309 (http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-V70XC70-2001-2007/Transmission-&-Drive-Train/Mobil-ATF-3309/p-127-389-1997/), I intend to flush every 30k in my garage - will the famed Gibbons method! You can wipe the plug clean @ that time. JMO

Well, I like the 'wipe off the magnet every X miles' idea. Anything to get the poison out of there can only be for the best.
