01 XC70 - Transmission Service Required

I have an 01 XC70 with 68k miles.
I was stopped at a traffic light yesterday and I felt a little 'clunk'. The Check Engine Light came on and so did the message 'TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED'
I pulled over, turned off the car and restarted.....the lights and message stayed on but the car seemed to work fine. This morning, the check engine light is on but no Transmission message on the display panel.
Any quick advice so as to avoid the costly repairs mentioned elsewhere in the forums?

There is no quick advice, you need to bring it in to a Volvo dealer and pull the codes.
They will (and I will) suggest you do a tranny flush, download new software and reset the adaptors...and hope that it will be fine
(but you already knew this if you've read the forums, right?).
I STRONGLY suggest you do this, don't be an ostrich and think it will get better on its own
