Hi!

Yesterday my wife drove my XC the whole day, and during the evening I had to make a short trip. Entering my XC - and - fuel meter was at the bottom.

Checking the XC computer - which tells me that I have another 30km to go. So this is enough for my trip, so I decided to buy fuel somewhere in the target area (15km away).

I had the chance to make about 10km, then I had no reaction to my gas pedal, and after secons the engine has gone off.

Standing in the middle of a dark forest - with still 30km to go on the computer.

Software bug? Sensor malfunction? Did this happen to someone??

Hi Aemsn,

I wondered about this so asked when I bought the car. Not sure important it is but my dealer told me that they refine the calibration of the meter as part of their inspection tests. I have been down to 30km on my meter a couple of times with no problems (and when I filled up the amount of fuel taken seemed about right)

Neil

I am wondering if this readout is keyed to the speed you are doing. You would think it would be, because clearly you have more kilometers left at a slow speed than a high one.

So if you took a reading as you started out, you were probably going slow and so had "lots" of kilometers in the tank... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I wouldn't be suprised if the trip computer calculates miles/km's to go by looking both at your actual fuel consumption and your average fuel consumption. This could result in situations as described by aemsn.  http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif

Hi!

The manual tolds that the average fuel consumption of the last 30km are used for the calculation. If you are below 30km to go, some --- should appear in the display.

I have driven ware carefully with this minimum to go, so it was definitly not my fault.

Gimme a break! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
Anybody who runs the tank down to "empty" and then complains that the little gas guage is not accurate to the exact 1/2 cup, so he can squeeze a couple more km in before fuelling deserves to run out of gas. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

BTW, with pressurized fuel injection systems, the fuel pump is in the tank, and requires about 1/4 tank for proper cooling. A former student of mine who was a long-time auto tech said they saw a lot of fuel pump failures from folks who habitually ran their tanks empty before refuelling. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif

My only experience with the XC trip computer is that if I put 70 l of fuel in the tank, and I'm averaging 10 l/100km, it says I have 700 km to empty; at 1/2 tank it says 350 km. I put this kind of info in the "duh" category. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Given the lack of precision in the guage, the "average" nature of the calculation, and the unknown quality of the gasoline/water mixture in the bottom of your tank, I'd be reluctant to run any less than about 10l before refill.
Or get a rally-type fuel guage. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Gosh, never new about cooling the fuel pump. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif
